About Campeon de Campeones
The Campeón de Campeones MX tournament is an annual competition organized by the Mexican Football Federation. This competition was created during the early days of the professional league in Mexico (1943), but there were major problems that affected its continuity. First, there was a ten-year hiatus between 1977 and 1987; then, there was one more pause between 1996 and the year 2002. The last pause in this competition took place between 2006 and 2014, but nowadays the tournament is seen by most as the kickoff to every Liga MX season.
The format of this competition has changed over time. The first editions saw the league champions fighting for this championship against the Cup winners, but this changed in 2002, when Liga MX divided the season calendar into two tournaments, meaning that the Campeón de Campeones is now played between the winners of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments.
Did you know? América entered the second decade of the 21st century as the team with the most Campeón de Campeones appearances (13) and the most losses (7) than any other Liga MX side in history.
