About USL Championship
The United Soccer League is the second-tier men's soccer league in the U.S. This league saw the light in 2011 after the merger of the USL First Division and the USL Second Division. Most of the clubs playing in this league are affiliated to MLS clubs or have some sort of relationship with them.
Thirty-four teams play in the USL Championship, which has been considered as the second-best football league in the United States; that is after the NASL lost its license with some teams choosing to join the USL’s more organized structure.
Teams participate in either the Eastern or Western Conference. Each club plays every team in its conference twice. Six games - against regional rivals and regardless of their conference - are added to their schedule. Once the regular season is over, the six best teams in each conference enter the playoff stage. Conference champions face each other to determine the best team of the USL.
Did you know? Just like every other year, teams in this league seek pastures new in the MLS or in lower-tier categories. The 2019 season was the last for Nashville SC since the club surrendered its rights and image to an MLS franchise.
