Costa Rica's FIFA World Cup squad and players to watch

If there's a team that can shock the world just like in 2014, that team is Costa Rica. The CONCACAF side reached the quarter final stage for the first time in history four years ago, and with 12 players that were included in that historic squad, Los Ticos will try to prove that they were not a one-hit wonder.

Led by Keylor Navas and Bryan Ruiz, the Central American team will have to put up an effort to make it past the Group Stage, especially after being drawn against Brazil, Serbia and Switzerland.

Coach's objective

Oscar Ramirez faces a mammoth task: trying to make the world forget about José Luis Pinto. The team's former boss led a combative side to the final eight teams, and reaching that same stage won't be easy, especially since the world knows that Los Ticos can work properly under pressure.

New faces

Ian Smith, currently playing in Sweden, made the cut due to José Salvatierra's injury. He's played only one match for Costa Rica, and he will try to earn a spot in Ramírez's lineup against a seasoned veteran like Cristian Gamboa.

Veterans

Johnny Acosta (defender) and Bryan Ruiz (midfielder) are the oldest players in Costa Rica's roster. Both were included in the 2014 World Cup squad, and their contribution will come in handy if they want to repeat such a performance in Russian soil.

Major absences

José Salvatierra will miss this World Cup after suffering a knee injury. Left back Junior Díaz was also left out of the team, even if he's one of the most capped players in La Sele's history.

Full squad list

Goalkeepers: Keylor Navas, Patrick Pemberton, Leonel Moreira.

Strikers: Johan Venegas, Marco Ureña, Joel Campbell.
