After registering a series of good results in La Liga since Rafael Benitez’s sacking, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane now faces a herculean task as he makes his Champions League debut as Los Blancos manager. Zidane, a Champions League winner with Real Madrid, would want to inspire his side against the Italian giants, who are on a four-match winning streak. The former France international is well-known for his stunner when Real Madrid lifted the coveted trophy in 2002 against Bayer Leverkusen.
He is currently enjoying a good run of results since taking over from the Spaniard. Out of the six games he has been in charge, Zizou has only lost two points.
The Spanish giants are in dire need of a trophy this season especially after failing to win any major title in the previous season. Earlier this season, they were expelled from the Copa del Rey for fielding an ineligible player and to make things even more difficult, league leaders FC Barcelona seem to be in top gear in their race to defend the La Liga title.
The Blaugrana have a four-point lead against Zinedine Zidane’s men with a game in hand. With the Copa del Rey out of the picture and the La Liga title getting out of reach, Los Blancos would want to prove a point this season by winning the mother of all club titles in Europe; the UEFA Champions League.
Zidane’s journey to the promised land with the Santiago Bernabeu outfit starts against The Wolves, who have not lost a match since their 1-0 loss against their rivals Juventus last month. Their latest victory was against Carpi last weekend, and this gives them the much-needed motivation to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League, something that they have failed to achieve since 2008.
Team news
Coach Luciano Spalletti could have veterans Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi available for selection after recovering in time from calf injuries. However, winger Mohamed Salah could be sidelined due to a thigh injury.
Real Madrid
Los Blancos will miss the services of Gareth Bale, Pepe and Marcelo. Despite Raphael Varane’s red card in La Liga during Real Madrid’s match against Athletic Club last weekend, he could still be available as Pepe’s replacement since his suspension does not apply to European games.
