The Seleccao captain steered his country to the historic Euro 2016 victory against hosts France last summer.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the country's player of the year. The 32-year-old played a pivotal role in Seleccao's historic Euro 2016 triumph in France last summer.

His leadership skills and fighting spirit came into play particularly in the final of the tournament when he picked up an injury but still joined manager Fernando Santos on the touchline to issue instructions to his national teammates as Eder powered home the winner. Speaking of Fernando Santos, he was named Portugal's Manager of the Year, while Bayern Munich youngster Renato Sanches scooped Portugal's Young Player of the Year award. Speaking after winning the award, the four-time Ballon d'Or winner said:

"It was a very special year for me because the Euros was the only trophy I was still missing.

"I want to thank the Portuguese people again, they gave us confidence on our way to the title."

Portugal are currently preparing for their World Cup qualifying match against Hungary on March 25. They will then play an international friendly game against Sweden three days later.
