The transfer window is no longer a place where teams can afford buying quality players, since prices can only be met by those ready to splash cash.
At least that's what José Mourinho thinks, considering the recent moves that saw Alvaro Morata join Chelsea for £80M yesterday, and other transfers made even by his own team.
Speaking in a press conference prior to tonight's Manchester Derby, Mourinho admitted his shock for the amount of money being spent to buy players, even if they are not worthy of such amounts of money.
"What's being paid these days to sign players are just crazy numbers. Those figures don't really add up when you consider the quality of some of those footballers," Mourinho stated.
"There's a difference between great players and those that you can consider as good. But right now, trying to buy an average player ends up being too expensive. Even transfers involving normal players are now linked to impressive numbers," Mourinho added.
Mourinho, who's team signed Paul Pogba last summer to make him the most expensive player in the world, also referred to Chelsea's signing of Alvaro Morata, one of his top transfer targets who got away after Real Madrid turned down a similar offer than the one they ended accepting from the Blues.
I am not interested in what Chelsea Football Club does, really. I think it was obvious Chelsea would sign a striker, especially after the situation with the manager and Diego (Costa). It was clear that they were going to get a striker, they did it with Alvaro and Alvaro is a very good player for them," Mourinho concluded.
