Clubs overspent by 30% on players in the recent record-breaking transfer window.

With the transfer window in great inflation, the CIES Football Observatory took an in-depth look at transfer fees and the rise in prices in the summer of 2017. According to the report, clubs overpaid for players by 30% - a record since their implementation of the transfer value algorithm.

This comes as little surprise given that the record from last year – Paul Pogba’s Man United return – has been surpassed by three different players in the summer of 2017. Of those three, Neymar reigns on top as the most expensive player in history at €222m.

CIES also calculated the most overpriced players in the recent transfer window, but Neymar’s was surprisingly not number one. That honor went PSG team-mate Kylian Mbappe, who secured a move from Monaco.

“The transfer fees negotiated in the case of loans with an obligation to buy are also included”, meaning the Frenchman’s €180m price which will be paid next season was included. According to the report, Les Parisiens overpaid for the 18-year-old by €87.4m

In second place was Ousmane Dembele, the €147m Frenchman whom Barca broke the bank for to sign from Borussia Dortmund. With his estimated value at €95.8m, the Blaugrana overpaid by €51.2m.

Benjamin Mendy’s Man City arrival was the most overpriced Premier League transfer of this summer, with the Citizens overpaying for the former Monaco full-back by €29m. Patrik Schick’s move to Roma (+€21.0m) was the most over-priced Serie A transfer.

According to CIES’ algorithms, which takes age; goals; position; and length of contract into consideration when calculating transfer value, Mohamed Salah was the best bargain of the summer. Liverpool paid €50m for the Egyptian, €19.4m less than his true value.

Neymar was a surprise absentee from this list given his record-breaking move to Ligue 1. CIES estimated the Brazilian’s value at €210.7m in a report in June, 2017, meaning PSG overpaid €11.3m for the Selecao ace.
