Today’s DFB Pokal final between Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt will be the final game for iconic manager Jupp Heynckes. The German veteran will return back to retirement, but not until he guides the Bavarians in a final for one last time.
The 73-year-old dived back into professional football after Carlo Ancelotti’s sacking back in October. The 2012/13 treble winner was never bound to stay on beyond the current season, coming on as an interim boss until the end of the campaign, meaning the clash at the Olympiastadion will be Josef’s second farewell.
Speaking ahead of that encounter, die Roten chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted that the players “have an obligation to win the double” for the outgoing tactician. He also stressed that this will be the final 90 minutes for Jupp.
“He has his very last game of his career. After that he will definitely finally retire,” Rummenigge said while laughing, as per Bild.
The Bayern Munich chief also revealed that the 73-year-old was gifted with a collage of the players’ signatures and farewell messages. In it, Thomas Muller left the popular boss a cheeky note.
“Thomas Müller wrote: ‘See you in October’," Karl-Heinz said.
This is likely not a vote of no-confidence for Frankfurt boss Niko Savic, who will take over at the Allianz Arena next term, but rather a joke between a student and his teacher. However, should the incoming boss struggle, one could easily predict rumors of Heynckes’ return emerging.
