Football's governing body in Europe has finally decided to provide technological support to their referees.

Referees working in the world's most important club competition will finally get some help, as UEFA decided to announce the use of the Video Assistant Referee in UEFA Champions League games.

Tests and preparations will go on for the remainder of the year, as the system will be used in the competition's early rounds all the way to the final.

Following the overall success of the system in the FIFA World Cup, fans wondered why UEFA had decided not to implement the system in the competition. Today, their wishes have been fulfilled.

"We are confident that introducing Video Assistant Referees in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient and successful implementation of VAR in the UEFA Champions League, the world's flagship club competition," UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin stated.

The system will be used in several UEFA-sanctioned tournaments starting next year, including the 2019 UEFA Supercup, the 2020 UEFA Euro, the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League, and the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League.
