Mesut Özil's future seems to be further away from Arsenal with each hour that goes by, but the only team that had shown interest in signing him away from his Gunners' nightmare under Unai Emery has ended the pursuit of the German playmaker.
Spanish coach Emery has repeatedly hinted that Özil's place in the club is not safe, especially since his recent performances don't justify his massive $437,000-a-week salary with the Spanish side. With that in mind, Özil had been offered the chance to look for employment elsewhere, with Fenerbahce in pole position since the footballer has always been a fan of the Turkish club.
With reports suggesting that a loan deal could be sealed in the upcoming weeks, Fenerbahce's execs came clean about their intentions and took a step aside in the race to sign the footballer in a press release issued earlier today.
"Mesut Ozil, with his career and standing, successfully represents our country abroad. He is an important value known with the identity of Fenerbahce," the press release states.
"However, Fenerbahce does not have a proposal for Mesut Ozil. Under the current economic conditions, such a step is not possible for both parties. Our president, Ali Koc, made statements on the subject on June 20 and emphasized that this could not be realised in the short term," the document adds.
Özil was spotted at Arsenal's training complex as his future is set to sorted out. While the former German international seems keen on fighting for a spot in Emery's lineup, the team's tight transfer budget might force the Gunners to transfer the footballer.
The German playmaker has played 231 games since he joined Arsenal in the 2013-14 season, scoring 43 goals and winning three FA Cup titles with the Gunners and the FA Community Shield in 2015.
