However, there’s the FA Cup at stake and as of now, the Carling Cup looks to be Liverpool’s best option for silverware. They've now put a few troubles behind by overcoming the tricks of minnows Exeter City and Brighton in the Second and Third Rounds respectively.
The way to reach Wembley, though, remains long. But Steven Gerrard, who made his return from injury in midweek, is keeping his head up and holding fast to the club’s ambitions.
“We haven't been to a major cup final for a long time so we've got to take every cup seriously. Especially when there's no Europe, that makes it a bit easier for us to put stronger sides out,” Gerrard told the press.
“Kenny has assembled a fantastic squad and we've got a couple of good players for each position so even when he mixes it up or rests people, we've still got a strong side.
“When you play for Liverpool it's all about winning trophies. That's why we've got to take every cup competition seriously. That was the message from the manager before we went out at Brighton.
“He said we want to be one step closer to a major cup final. And being captain, I want nothing more than to go to Wembley with the rest of the lads and lift a cup.”
