Serbia shocked many observers by winning their qualifying group, ahead of European heavyweights Portugal. Now, they will be hoping to make an impact in only their third World Cup as an independent nation.

How to watch the 2022 World Cup in Serbia - Serbia's schedule, TV and streaming rights

Fans in Serbia will be able to follow the Orlovi via public broadcaster RTS, which has secured access to all 64 games at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. RTS will provide coverage of the tournament on TV across its family of channels, live-streaming via its mobile apps, and audio commentary via its corresponding radio networks.

As such, Serbian supporters can look forward to having various options to stay on top of all the action as the Orlovi look to try to get out of their tricky group and go as far in the tournament as possible.

About Serbia in FIFA World Cup history

Serbia's World Cup history is quite short considering they have not been an independent nation for long. In 2006, Serbia, who were then known as Serbia and Montenegro competed in Germany in the country's first World Cup since the breakup of Yugoslavia. Since then, the country has split again, this time to become simply Serbia, and thus will be making their third ever appearance at a World Cup. To date, Serbia have struggled to make much of an impact, crashing out on the group stages in 2010 and 2014 after winning one of their group stage games, and will obviously hope that third time will be the charm as they prepare to begin their adventure in Qatar.

Who is Serbia's coach for the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

57-year-old Dragan Stojković has been in charge of the Serbian national team since March 3, 2021. Nicknamed "Piksi" due to a cartoon he enjoyed watching in his youth, Stojković plied his trade as a midfielder, playing for clubs in Serbia, France, Japan, and Italy before retiring in 2001. Prior to taking his current position, Stojković managed Japanese side Nagoya Grampus from 2008 to 2013, where he won the J.League MVP in 1995 as a player, followed by Chinese team Guangzhou R&F between 2015 and 2020.

Stojković successfully led Serbia to finish top of their qualifying group thanks to a stunning 2-1 win over Portugal

Under his leadership, Serbia secured an automatic ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a record of eight wins and two losses, and topped their group by three points ahead of heavyweights Portugal.

Serbia's expectations ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Serbia did surprise many observers with their strong performance during qualifying, which saw them finish top of Group A and secure an automatic berth to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Although the team have never qualified for the knockout rounds before, it certainly is not out of the realm of possibility that they might be able to finally overcome that hurdle if they manage to pick up some positive results especially against Cameroon and Switzerland in their quartet.

Serbia: Key players for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Key for Serbia, known as the Orlovi (Eagles) by their fans, will be the performances of several star players. One player many will have their eyes on is Dušan Vlahović. While the 22-year-old has endured a frustrating season so far for Juventus, Vlahović  is nonetheless still a top talent who could be one of the young players to make a huge impact on the world's biggest stage in Qatar. To date, he has netted eight goals for the senior team, including four in qualifiers and will be looking to open his account at the big event in Qatar.

Another Serie A-based player fans will expect to have an impact is Sergej Milinković-Savić, who missed out on his team's most recent competitive fixture against Norway due to a suspension. Still, the Lazio ace, who has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the Stadio Olimpico in past seasons, will be a certain inclusion in the squad heading to Qatar and will also look forward to a strong showing at the upcoming World Cup.

With 50 goals, Aleksandar Mitrović is Serbia's all-time top goalscorer, and will be making his second appearance at a World Cup. The 28-year-old scored the game winner for his country in a 2-1 road win over Portugal last November to secure an automatic berth for the Orlovi. It was only fititng that he scored the game winner, as a few years before, the Fulham based striker missed the last spot-kick in a penalty shoot-out with Scotland, which meant that Serbia missed out on qualifying for EURO 2020.

Finally, another key player for Serbia will be Dušan Tadić, who captains his national side as well as Eredivisie club Ajax. Tadić, with 90 caps, is currently Serbia's most active capped player and netted the first of Serbia's two goals against Portugal to help the team qualify for the upcoming World Cup. So far, Tadić, who will celebrate his 34th birthday in Qatar, has scored 18 goals for his national side, but has never done so at a World Cup (with the 2022 edition being his second tournament for the senior team).

Serbia's roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Serbia's 2022 FIFA World Cup schedule

Serbia have been placed in Group G, with Brazil, Cameroon, and Switzerland for company. The Orlovi will naturally face a series of tough examinations to secure a knockout berth, with Brazil naturally viewed as the favorites to top this quartet. However, Cameroon and Switzerland could present a great chance for this ambitious side to gain some points and secure what would be their first ever appearance in the round of 16 as an independent nation.

The Orlovi kick off their World Cup campaign against South American giants Brazil, before taking on Cameroon and Switzerland to wrap up proceedings.
