With only one game left and all European tournament spots allocated, there will be four teams battling to avoid relegation.

The 2020-21 Primeira Liga title race came to an end last week, when Sporting claimed a crucial win over Boavista to secure their first title in 19 years. With that in mind, all that was left to sort out was the remaining UEFA Champions League spot, which went to Porto after this weekend's result.

Now, the teams involved in the battle to avoid relegation are the only ones that will be eager for this midweek games to begin. Added to that, Sporting will surely want to end their successful season by going back to winning ways in front of their home crowd.

Without further ado, let's have a look at what went down in the Portuguese top-flight this weekend.

With Sporting's title pursuit over, Benfica still kept a glimmer of hope of reaching UCL spots, but Porto's win ended those hopes and condemned Jorge Jesús' side to the UEFA Europa League.

Primeira Liga's Top 3 scorers

Benfica's Haris Seferovic and Pedro Goncalves faced each other in this weekend's game, and with each player bagging a brace, the title race is more open than ever. Both players are level at 20 goals, and whoever scores more goals this Wednesday will be crowned as the top scorer in the league.

Primeira Liga - Top headlines

  • Porto boss hinted to extend deal - Porto's boss Sergio Conceicao may have been tempted by other European teams, but fellow coach André Vilas-Boas has revealed that his colleague may stay put with the Dragons for one more year. According to Vilas-Boas, Conceicao's brand of intense football will continue to dazzle Porto fans despite the rumors that see him coaching elsewhere.

  • Fans will not be able to attend final round - The current Primeira Liga season went on without fans on the stands, and that is exactly how the season will come an end, as league officers decided not to allow fans in all stadiums to prevent any further problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Benfica boss facing major criticism over "failed investment" - Coach Jorge Jesús was heavily criticized by a member of Benfica's board, mainly because the massive investment made on the team did not pay off. The member of Benfica's board demanded Jesús to be more humble ahead of next season to help the Eagles reach a spot in the UEFA Champions League and win the title while at it.

Top matches to watch in the Primeira Liga on May 19, 2021

  • Nacional vs Rio Ave - The hosts have already been relegated to the LigaPRO, and Rio Ave may still avoid such a fate by winning their match. A win here for them, combined with losses by Boavista and or Portimonense would do the trick for the Villacondenses.

  • Santa Clara vs Farense - Farense are also eager to leave the spots that would relegate them to the LigaPRO, and in order to avoid that, they must beat Santa Clara and wait for the rest of the games to unfold. The "Lighthouse Lions" may save themselves with three negative results for Rio Ave, Portimonense and Boavista, but that may be easier said than done.

  • Sporting vs Marítimo - The hosts will want to say goodbye to a historic season by celebrating their title with their fans. Moreover, this could be the last game for some of the team's heroes this season, as their performances this year have attracted the interest of some high-profile teams in Europe.
