The veteran striker made history with his brace in France's first group game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The inevitable has happened! France's all-time top-goalscorer record is Olivier Giroud's to lose after the veteran striker levelled Thierry Henry's haul with his goal contribution on Tuesday night.

The 36-year-old forward scored twice as Les Bleus began their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 4-1 victory over Australia. The AC Milan striker was crucial for Didier Deschamps' men who fought back from a goal down to take a comfortable lead in the end. 

Craig Goodwin opened the scoring by putting Australia ahead inside the ninth minute. France managed a response through Adrien Rabiot before Olivier Giroud got the second ahead of the half time break. 23 minutes into the second half, Kylian Mbappe got the defending champions' third goal of the night and subsequentlly assisted Giroud for the fourth. 

With the goal, Giroud took his tally on the international stage to 51, equalling Thiery Henry's record as France's all-time top goalscorer in history. The former Chelsea and Arsenal marksman has also become the second oldest player to score at the World Cup after Cameroon's Roger Milla.
