2022 FIFA WC: Belgium set record with Canada win

2022 FIFA World Cup: Belgium equals Brazil's record with Canada win

November 23, 2022 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Red Devils have landed in the tournament's history books with their narrow victory on Wednesday.

Belgium have entered the World Cup's history books after beating Canada to secure their eighth consecutive group stage win at the tournament. The Red Devils managed a 1-0 victory over the North Americans, equalling the record originally set by Brazil.

Canada dominated Belgium for long periods of the teams' Group F opener but misfired on too many chances to earn their first-ever World Cup win. The latter's bid to securing the win was significantly boosted after Thibaut Courtois saved Alphonso Davies' penalty in the first half of the night's affair.

Shortly after, the Europeans had their breakthrough with Toby Alderweireld's pass from over 60 yards unlocking Canada's back line and landing at the feet of Michy Batshuayi. The former Chelsea striker expertly turned the ball home with his first touch to secure all the three points for Roberto Martinez's men.

With the night's result, Belgium came only the second team to have won eight consecutive World Cup group games, after Brazil. The 5-time World Cup winners have achieved the feat twice, first from 1986-1994 and the second being 2002-2010.
