After more than a month, club football is back, and Manchester United will host Burnley at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup Round of 16.

Manchester United will welcome Burnley to Old Trafford in their first game following the return of club football. The Red Devils will be looking to book their spot in the quarter-finals of the League Cup when they take on the Clarets on Wednesday night.

It has been a month and six days since Alejandro Garnacho scored the winner in a trip to Fulham with the game's last kick hand United three vital points ahead of the break. The result left the Red Devils in fifth position with three points currently separating them and fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur while having a game in hand. The Old Trafford club has since not been in competition action, but featured in a series of friendlies in Spain while a host of their first team players were away in Qatar.

United come into Wednesday's encounter having recorded seven wins in their last 10 outings across all competitions. In the EFL Cup, they progressed to the last 16 stage with an emphatic 4-2 win over Aston Villa and will be poised to replicate the same performance to book a quarter-final berth at the expense of Burnley. Winning the trophy this season remains a priority for Erik ten Hag and his charges as the last time the club laid its hands on the silverware was back under Jose Mourinho in 2017.

Needless to say, the opponent United comes up against will relish the challenge of halting the wheels of their cart to fuel their potential of being dark horses. Despite being relegated to the Championship last season, Burnley have held their own, and are currently seated at the apex of the league's leaderboard. The feat is no fluke but is as a result of the new leadership spearheaded by former Anderlecht boss Vincent Kompany.

So far, the Clarets have secured 47 points from their first 23 matches, and are six points clear of second-placed Sheffield United. In the EFL Cup, they have had to win two games to reach this stage, beating Shrewsbury Town 1-0 in August before defeating Crawley Town 3-1 last time out.

Head to head: Manchester United vs Burnley

Manchester United recorded a 3-1 win over Burnley when the two teams met in the Premier League at Old Trafford last season. In the reverse encounter at Turf Moor, the points were shared in a 1-1 draw back in February 2022.
