Leicester City will hope to make a final attempt at salvaging their Champions League aspirations for next season when they host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Preview

Leicester City will be hoping to avoid a disappointing climax to what has been a remarkable season when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the King Power Stadium on Sunday. The Foxes, who secured a historic FA Cup title at the expense of Chelsea a few weeks ago, are on the verge of missing out on a Champions League place for next season having looked like real candidates for the most part of the season.

Last week's 2-1 defeat to the Blues forced Brendan Rodgers' men to drop to the fifth position, with Liverpool climbing into fourth due to them having a superior goal difference. With just one game of the season left to play, the spot is still up for grabs should they get the better of Spurs while hoping that either one of Thomas Tuchel and Juergen Klopp's bands fall short in their respective games.

Indeed, the essence of a win for Leicester cannot be understated as they will approach Sunday's encounter with Spurs on the back of that defeat to Chelsea. So far, the Foxes have managed just one win in their last four Premier League outings. This, coupled with their average record at home this season, raises questions on what could become of their chances against a Tottenham side that is eager to secure European football qualification.

Despite parting ways with Jose Mourinho in the course of the season, the North London club could not exactly turn their fortunes around and sit in the seventh position ahead of the final round of matches. The prospect of featuring in the Europa League next season exist but they will be required to defeat Leicester while hoping that West Ham - who occupy the sixth position - also falls short in their clash with Southampton. With 62 points from 37 outings, the Hammers sit three points above their London rivals and would only be safe if they secure at least a point.

Meanwhile, Tottenham's form gives very little room for fans to anticipate a win for them. Out of the 10 games they have played across all competitions in recent weeks, they have managed four wins, four defeats and two draws. Their last league outing resulted in a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa and, as a result, they will be hoping to make amends as soon as possible with the stakes very high this time. Having lost 2-0 in the first round meeting with the Foxes, Ryan Mason's should be motivated to avenge the defeat and dash the hopes of the King Power outfit.

Team news

Leicester City will fancy their odds against Tottenham Hotspur even without the likes of James Justin, Harvey Barnes and Cengiz Under who are unavailable as a result of injuries. Center-back Jonny Evans is also expected to sit out the game due to a lingering foot injury.

On the contrary, will have their key men available for Sunday's showdown. With the exception of Ben Davies who remains on the sidelines with a calf problem, and Japhet Tanganga who is yet to recover from a leg injury, Spurs should be the needed ammo to take care of the Foxes.

Predicted starting XI

  • Leicester City: Schmeichel; Castagne, Fofana, Soyuncu; Pereira, Ndidi, Tielemans, Thomas; Maddison; Iheanacho, Vardy

  • Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris; Doherty, Alderweireld, Dier, Reguilon; Lo Celso, Hojbjerg; Bale, Alli, Son; Kane.
