Gareth Southgate has named his preliminary 33-man squad for this summer's European Championship, revealing all the players in contention for a spot in England's final 26-man roster for Euro 2020.
Several obvious names made the list, with Premier League Golden Boot winner Harry Kane, Aston Villa star Jack Grealish, Chelsea Player of the Season Mason Mount, Man City sensation Phil Foden, and West Ham midfield general Declan Rice all making the cut.
Due to several injuries, Southgate was forced to name a 33-man preliminary squad, delaying the final decision for a week. The likes of Henderson, Grealish, and Maguire have suffered recent injuries, leaving question marks over their fitness. The manager will announce the 26-man squad on June 1, meaning there will be time to assess the three aforementioned players before deciding whether to leave them out or not.
"Our situation is more complicated than any other country," Southgate explained, as per the Daily Mail. "We have known for a while we have 12 players in Euro finals. We needed additional players for first part of the camp.
"We have injured players at various stages. A couple with little info and a couple back into training (Henderson and Grealish) but are not training consistently or with their team in Henderson's case. The delay gives us more time make better decisions."
There were a few notable names omitted from Southgate's squad, namely Leicester City midfielder James Maddison, with the gaffer stating that "there are players that are ahead of James in those areas". Eric Dier, once a favorite under Gareth, is another who misses out after enduring a poor season at Tottenham. Spurs team-mate Dele Alli was also axed while Burnley keeper Nick Pope was failed to pass the grade due to injury.
There was also no room for Southampton and Leeds strikers Danny Ings and Patrick Bamford, but Liverpool talent Trent Alexander-Arnold has worked his way back into the fold after speculation he would be dropped. Jude Bellingham, Mason Greenwood, and Bukayo Saka are the England teenage sensations to be handed preliminary call-ups. Check out the 33-man squad in full below.
