Barça ace hands blow to Man Utd's transfer plans

Barcelona ace hands huge blow to Manchester United's transfer plans

March 9, 2023 By Oscar Rojas
The Blaugrana footballer had been on the Red Devils' radar for quite a few months, and it seems that their chances of hiring him have never been as narrow.

It is no secret that Manchester United's coach, Erik Ten Hag, is quite a fan of Frenkie de Jong's playing style. Between the Dutch boss' desire to hire the footballer and Barcelona's desperation to get rid of the footballer's wages, a deal between the two European giants was supposed to be in the works. Unfortunately for the English club, they failed to secure a deal for the player last summer, and it seems there will be no need to pursue that option once again.

Speaking in an interview with RAC-1, the Dutch player revealed he was never inclined to leave the club last summer, and if the team's hierarchy keeps pushing for his exit, he will once again stick to his deal and stay put at Camp Nou.

"I was rather calm about it because I knew I wanted to keep playing for Barcelona, and I have not changed my mind. I had always dreamed about playing for this team and I still think that. I want to accomplish big things here, I want to keep playing for Barcelona for as long as I can," the player stated.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup player with the Netherlands went on to share how Xavi's system will help him show his best form, while he also praised the contribution of one of his teammates to his style.

"A system with four midfielders is better for me, but beyond that, I get to play closer to the core of the team and that makes me more comfortable. I feel free to move, to control the ball, and to go through with it. Busquets is quite helpful because he always has my back. He is great handling the ball and he is quite a great defender, contrary to what some may think," the Dutch ace added.

After referring to his desire to win La Liga, de Jong admitted that Barcelona's main debt to their fans will be their performances in European tournaments regardless of what they win in Spain.

"If we win all three titles in Spain it would be extraordinary, but we have to do better in Europe and we all know it. I was hoping we would do much better in the UEFA Champions League, but our last two seasons have been disappointing because we didn't even make it to the next round and we even got kicked out of the Europa League. We have to do better than that because we have the squad to do so," the footballer concluded.
