Apparently, there will be no Messi-Suárez reunion in the United States, as Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez has reportedly told Gremio execs that he will hang up his boots as soon as possible.
A report by TyC Sports journalist Germán García Grova revealed that Suárez and the club will discuss his plans to retire as soon as a meeting between the player and the team's legal and marketing departments takes place.
Suárez allegedly told the club that his knee problems have become quite a nuisance. With that in mind, the striker is considering to put an end to his impressive career in coming weeks.
While Gremio are supportive of the player's decision, the club will take further steps to assure that Suárez is indeed injured and is not just making this up to have his contract terminated to join Inter Miami as a free agent. With that in mind, the club will only allow Suárez to leave only if a medical examination confirms his injury.
Added to that, the Brazilian side will also try to include an "anti-Inter Miami" clause in the agreement for his exit, to prevent Suárez from teaming up with his former teammate at Barcelona.
Suárez joined Gremio on December 31, 2022 after a spell with Nacional de Uruguay. He has played 26 games for the Brazilian club while scoring 14 goals, but recent problems to one of his knees could see him retiring from professional football.
His future as a player has also been questioned since Messi joined Inter Miami, where an alleged reunion featuring Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Suárez himself was supposed to take place. As things stand, it seems that the Uruguayan will not participate in that reunion, but we may be able to find out more on this story as time goes by.
