Los Ticos kick off their campaign with an exciting showdown against Panama while El Salvador and Martinique face off in Monday's other intriguing battle.

The 2023 Gold Cup is currently underway! A total of 16 teams, split up into four groups of four, are taking part in this exciting tournament, with only the top two teams from each group securing progression to the quarterfinals.

The USMNT, who are the defending champions, are in Group A and kicked off this tournament with a 1-1 draw against Jamaica. Mexico, who are the most successful team in this competition, are in Group B and got things off with an impressive 4-0 triumph over Honduras.

Monday sees the focus shift to Group C as Costa Rica and Panama, the favorites in this group, begin their search for a first-ever Gold Cup crown. The two will face off on Monday while El Salvador and Martinique, their other rivals, lock horns in the other fixture. Here's all you need to know about these two ties.

El Salvador vs Martinique & Costa Rica vs Panama – Team news

El Salvador

Joaquin Rivas is unavailable for this tie. Meanwhile, Nelson Bonilla was not named in the roster, which means Brayan Gil should lead the line as the 21-year-old continues his search for his first national team goal. MLS aces Alex Roldan, Romero, Osorio, and Eriq Zavaleta will all be hoping for minutes on the pitch.

Martinique

Kévin Fortuné should return to the lineup while captain Daniel Herelle, who is Martinique's most capped player, should take his number of appearances with the national team to 90. Yannis Clementia, who had a lovely campaign in the recent CONCACAF Nations League tournament, should start in goal.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica are without star keeper and captain Keylor Navas who misses out due to injury. Likewise, Oscar Duarte will not feature in this tournament, which is a huge blow to Los Ticos' defense. However, Francisco Calvo, Kendall Waston, Celso Borges, and Joel Campbell are available for selection.

Panama

Panama should line up similar to their CONCACAF Nations League semifinal showdown with Canada. Eric Davis was sent off in that tie, which they lost, but he has served his suspension and is thus available. Meanwhile, Cecilio Waterman is expected to lead the line.

Head-to-head record

El Salvador vs Martinique

  • This will be only the second encounter in history between these two nations.

  • Their one and only previous encounter came back in 2003 in the Gold Cup, with El Salvador beating Martinique 1-0.

  • However, El Salvador are on an eight-game winless streak, losing five of those fixtures, including defeats against the USMNT, Peru, Japan, and Honduras.

  • Martinique, on the other hand, have won their last two games, beating St. Lucia and Puerto Rico in the Gold Cup qualifiers but lost all but one of the seven games prior to the back-to-back victories.

Costa Rica vs Panama

  • This will be the 60th encounter between these two sides. However, this will be only the second time these two teams face off in the modern-day CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament.

  • Costa Rica boast the upper hand in the head-to-head record, winning more than half of this match-up (31).

  • Panama, meanwhile, have triumphed 16 times and have won the last two encounters with this opposition (both ties came in the CONCACAF Nations League).

  • Los Ticos enter this tie on a three-game losing streak and have won only once since their 2022 FIFA World Cup group stage elimination.

  • Panama, on the other hand, have won two of their last five outings, including a 2-0 triumph over Costa Rica in the recent CONCACAF Nations League tournament. Nonetheless, Thomas Christiansen's side enter Monday's game on the back of successive defeats, losing to Canada and Mexico.
