Group D's second round of matches will kick off on Saturday, July 1st.

On Tuesday, Canada, Guadeloupe, Cuba, and Guatemala all started their group stage campaign at the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Of the four teams in Group D, many had expected Canada to easily breeze through without much trouble - despite missing key players like Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David, who took part in the CONCACAF Nations League that Canada finished as runners-up to the USMNT.

However, things haven't gone exactly as planned, with a surprising leader on top of Group D after the first matchday.

Here's all you need to know ahead of matchday two for Group D at the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Cuba vs Guadeloupe

Cuba will come into their next game having suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Guatemala on matchday one, but will be taking on an opponent desperate to end their eight match winless run. Pablo Elier Sanchez's team attempted to park the bus against Guatemala in a bid to keep things under control, but that plan backfired spectacularly as Guatemala netted a goal early in the second half to ultimately win what was a rather dull tie by one goal to nil.

That means that Cuba have failed to score in their last three consecutive games, and now come into this contest having failed to score in six of their last seven matches at Gold Cup competitions. It goes without saying that if they want to have any shot at getting out of Group D, they will need to come out of their shells and could have an opportunity to do so this Saturday.

Meanwhile, Guadeloupe secured a fortunate two-all draw against Canada to end a seven-match losing streak at Gold Cups. It's also the first time in well over a decade (since 2009) that Guadeloupe have earned a point in the group stages in this competition, and despite losing four of their last six meetings against Cuba, will have hopes at ending that run as they hope position themselves well to potentially secure a knockout round spot.

Guatemala vs Canada

When the groups at the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup were announced, no one expected it to be Guatemala on top of Group D after one round. However, the minnows are right there, and could possibly book their spot in the knockout rounds for the first time in 12 years. They come into their upcoming showdown against Canada having earned a narrow 1-0 win against Cuba, which marks their first win in seven matches at Gold Cups, and if they can beat Canada, it will be the first time in the nation's history that they have been able to win more than one game at a Gold Cup.

Meanwhile, Canada, who were beaten 2-0 by the USMNT in the CONCACAF Nations League final earlier this month, will need to get up and running if they want to avoid what would be a shocking early exit. John Herdman's side were quite poor against Guadeloupe, especially considering that they had an advantage before conceding an unfortunate own goal. Although it ended up as a 2-2 draw, it will surely feel like a loss and now the pressure will be on a Canada side sans several star players to get things right against an opponent who have not beaten them since 2004.
