On Tuesday, California's famed Rose Bowl stadium is reportedly set to establish a new record for MLS matches. Los Angeles Galaxy and Los Angeles FC are set to lock horns in "El Trafico", a nod to the famed El Clasico clash starring Barcelona and Real Madrid that has captivated fans for decades.
The second Los Angeles derby of the season was set to take place in March, but due to bad weather, was re-scheduled for later in the 2023 MLS season. As such, this highly anticipated derby clash just so happens to be taking place on Independence Day, meaning that fans, after enjoying their barbeques and drinks, will be able to cap off a celebratory day with an entertaining football match. An estimated 80,000 are expected to be watching the game at the Rose Bowl, which, if this actually happens, will smash the record of 74,000-plus that attended a Charlotte vs LA Galaxy tie back in March 2022.
Tuesday's game will be the 20th edition of "El Trafico" and the two teams involved have not been experiencing the best of results as of late. The Galaxy sit second from last in the Western Conference, with Colorado Rapids only faring worse at this juncture. Although they're unbeaten in their last five MLS games, four of those have been draws, including a recent two-all stalemate against San Jose Earthquakes. As such, Greg Vanney's team will be desperate for a positive result against Los Angeles FC, who, despite sitting in second spot, come into this match having lost three of their last five matches.
Los Angeles are in a real funk at the moment. Steve Cherundolo's men have won just two of their last ten across all competitions. Despite back to back losses in the league, they have still done enough to be well ahead (16 points) coming into this derby clash, and will certainly believe they have a shot at some kind of redemption when the 20th "El Trafico" gets underway on Tuesday, July 4th.
