Things are about to change for Juventus, and the first order of business apparently has to do with getting some of the "old" stuff away from the team.
The club, as per la Gazzetta dello Sport, decided to fire Leonardo Bonucci even when he had a year left in his contract. Apparently, the center back was not included in Massimiliano Allegri's plans, leading to Bonucci's exit from the club this summer.
The report by the Italian newspaper states that team execs Cristiano Giuntolli and Giovanni Manna traveled to where Bonucci was spending his holidays to let him know about their decision. Bonucci was considering to call it quits from football, but the footballer had decided to postpone this until the end of the 2024 UEFA Euro, where he expects to defend the title with Italy.
Unfortunately for Bonucci, if he does play for the azzurri next summer, he will have to do so with another team, as Juventus are ready to cut their losses and make him a free agent in coming days.
Shockingly, Bonucci's case is not the only one where Juventus have decided to terminate a player's contract. The Italian newspaper reports that USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie has also been asked to search for other opportunities, as he is not included in Allegri's plans. McKennie was sent on loan to Leeds United last season, but after the club was relegated to the EFL Championship, the English side decided not to pursue a permanent deal.
Neither Bonucci nor McKennie will make the trip to North America with the bianconeri, in what seems to be a clear statement on what they need to do to earn playing time.
