Team news – Australia vs Nigeria

Australia

The biggest news is the absence of Sam Kerr as the iconic Australian goalscoring machine picked up a knock right before their opening game. The Chelsea forward could feature later down the tournament but the 29-year-old will not return in time for this clash.

If that was not enough, Mary Fowler, who replaced Kerr in the lineup, and Aivi Luik have also been ruled out due to concussions. This leaves Arsenal ace Caitlin Foord as the Matildas only senior striker. Stephanie-Elise Catley, who scored the winning goal in the 1-0 triumph over the Republic of Ireland, should start this game.

Nigeria

The African powerhouse will be without Deborah Abiodun due to suspension after she received a straight red card in the final few minutes of stoppage time in the opening game. That game against Canada ended nil-nil and they picked up no other issues.

Halimatu Ayinde and Rasheedat Ajibade, who missed the opener due to suspension, are now back in contention and could return to the lineup. Additionally, the spotlight will be on Barcelona attacker Asisat Oshoala, who scored 21 goals last season in the Primera División Femenina. Francisca Ordega could partner Oshoala in attack.

Australia vs Nigeria: Head-to-head

  • Nigeria are one of seven countries to have qualified for every edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup.

  • However, the African powerhouses have failed to score in 17 of their 27 Women's World Cup games and have made it past the group stage on only two occasions.

  • These two nations have met at the FIFA Women's World Cup before, with the Matildas triumphing 2-0 in that 2015 encounter.

  • Australia have won their last three clashes with African teams, with the most recent victory being that aforementioned win over Nigeria.

  • Caitlin Foord and Co. have won 10 of their last 11 games.

  • Unlike Nigeria, the Matildas have made it out of the group stage in the last four consecutive tournaments.

  • The Super Falcon have lost 13 of their last 18 FIFA Women's World Cup matches, winning only two (D3).
