Both South Africa and Jamaica will be heading to the round of 16 after impressive showings against Italy and Brazil.

The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup has thrown up plenty of surprises, and we're not even through to the knockout rounds just yet!

From Colombia defeating number-two ranked Germany to debutants Portugal pulling off an impressive draw against the USWNT to Nigeria's stunning win over co-hosts Australia, this summer's event has been one not to miss.

And now, on matchday three, not one, but two sides have written their names in the history books. First up is South Africa, who, in their second ever appearance at a World Cup not only have won their first game, but also have earned a ticket to the knockout rounds.

South Africa's inspiring run to the knockout rounds: From dejection to celebration

Banyana Banyana came into their final group stage match against Italy sitting on one point following a loss to Sweden and a draw with Argentina. As such, Desiree Ellis's team needed a victory in order to have a shot at entering unchartered territory - the knockout rounds.

Meanwhile, the Azzurre were also desperate for at least one point following their 5-0 humiliating loss to Sweden on matchday two. It was a predictably tense battle throughout, with Italy seemingly having done enough after securing their second to draw level in the 74th minute, as a draw would suffice for the Azzurre to sneak into the round of 16 behind group leaders Sweden.

However, in a scene that is befitting of a Hollywood tear-jerker, Thembi Kgatlana popped up in stoppages with the game winner to send South Africa's supporters and many neutrals wild.

In doing so, South Africa have now made history: by winning a game at a World Cup, and achieving something the men's team couldn't - securing a spot at the round of 16.

Jamaica: The Reggae Girlz keep the party going with shock result

Elsewhere, Jamaica, thanks to their great start to the competition, merely needed a point to progress. Paired in a quartet alongside heavyweights France, Brazil, and debutants Panama, not many gave Lorne Donaldson's team much chance at progressing.

After all, Jamaica, who are making their second ever World Cup appearance - much like South Africa - failed to win a single match back in 2019 and exited quickly at the group stages. This time around, however, the Caribbean nation clearly had other ideas, and in the absence of expectations, have excelled beyond even what their fans could've imagined.

A scoreless draw with France was followed up by a gritty 1-0 win over Panama to put them in pole position for securing a round of 16 berth.

Next up, however, was Brazil. Although the South Americans have not been at their best, they nonetheless are still a top ten ranked side and had the players to cause Jamaica worries.

Well, Jamaica, knowing that they needed a point, opted to approach this game with caution, and successfully shut down the South American powerhouse over 90 minutes to grind out another 0-0 draw, with shot-stopper Rebecca Spencer receiving the player of the match award for her excellent performance between the posts.

Now, both these teams will feature in the round of 16 and enter exciting new territory. Will they be able to spring another series of upsets? We'll just have to wait and see.
