Preview

Manchester City are back in action this midweek, with the treble winners being 90 minutes away from another silverware. The English giants face Sevilla on Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup as Guardiola's men aim to get trophy no.4 under their belt.

Last season, Haaland and Co. reigned supreme, beating Arsenal to the Premier League title, Manchester United to the FA Cup crown, and Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final to become only the second English club — and eighth European team — in history to win the treble.

However, since then, a lot has changed at the club. Ilkay Gundogan, the man who captained the Cityzens last term, has left for free to Barcelona while Riyad Mahrez also bid farewell to the champions of Europe. And the ramifications have shown on the pitch.

Guardiola's men kicked off the new campaign just over a week ago, taking Arsenal in the Community Shield and losing on penalties after a mixed performance. They then began their Premier League title defense last Friday and while they ended up beating Burnley 3-0 thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland, Pep's side showed imperfection once again.

The Community Shield defeat has denied Man City the opportunity of winning the sextuple. Nonetheless, expect Guardiola's men to give everything against Sevilla.

The Spanish side, on the other hand, will face the daunting task of trying to stop the treble winners. However, Los Hispalenses enjoyed a tremendous end to the campaign under Jose Luis Mendilibar and will look to maintain this upward trajectory.

The club started the 2022-23 campaign under Julen Lopetegui, who was eventually sacked due to their horrendous results. Jorge Sampaoli succeeded the Spaniard but did not fare any better and was promptly relieved of his duties.

Jose Luis Mendilibar's arrival not only steered the Spanish heavyweights away from the relegation zone but also helped the club win silverware, lifting the UEFA Europa League for a record-extending seventh time.

The Primera Division side beat Jose Mourinho's Roma on penalties to lift the title and thus qualified for the UEFA Super Cup. However, Sevilla's 2-1 defeat against Valencia on the opening day of the Spanish top-flight season shows En Nesyri and Co. still have work to do.

Team news

Manchester City: Kevin de Bruyne will play no part in this game after suffering a serious hamstring injury that will require surgery. As a result, the Belgian will be sidelined for months. And he isn't the only absentee as Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva will miss this clash as well. Fortunately, though, John Stones is back while Josko Gvardiol could get his first start.

Sevilla: Loic Bade was sent off in Sevilla's first game of the Liga season but he is fine to feature in this tie. However, Tanguy Nianzou and Marcao are both out for this fixture.

Key stats

  • While this is Manchester City's first UEFA Super Cup appearance, Sevilla have made this stage seven times before.

  • The Spanish giants finished as runners-up in this tournament in their last five outings.

  • In fact, in the last 10 UEFA Super Cup showdowns, only once has the UEFA Europa League champions beaten the UEFA Champions League winners — Atletico Madrid in 2018 when they overcame Real Madrid.

  • The Cityzens look to become only the third English club to win this competition this century following Liverpool and Chelsea.

  • These two clubs met in the UEFA Champions League group stage last season, with Guardiola's men winning on both occasions, scoring a combined seven goals while conceding only once.

  • Erling Haaland netted a brace against the Spanish outfit and will want to add to his unstoppable goalscoring form again.
