Ecudaor will hope to hold their place among the top three when they host Peru on Tuesday.

Preview

Ecuador will welcome Peru in their sixth match of the South American World Cup Qualifiers this Tuesday. The hosts, having enjoyed a stellar campaign so far, suffered a 2-0 defeat against Brazil in their most recent outing and will look back to getting to winning ways as soon as possible. On the contrary, the visitors will be eager to end their poor run of four defeats as they aim to get out of the bottom of the table.

La Tri currently sit in third position with nine points from five games. They began their spell with a 1-0 defeat to Argentina before securing successive wins over Uruguay, Bolivia and Colombia. Across those three games, they got on the scoresheet on 13 times and conceded five in the process. Relatively, Peru will approach the encounter on the back of a five-game winless run in the qualifying campaign. After drawing 2-2 with Paraguay in their first qualifying game, Coach Ricardo Garreca have picked up successive losses against Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Columbia.

On the table, they have a negative nine goal return, having conceded at least two goals against all the opponents they have faced within that period. Needless to say, they would take pride in and inspiration from the fact that they have the upper hand on a head-to-head basis with their opponents. This will be the 54th meeting between the two countries with Peru holding a marginally better record.

The Whites and Reds have been victorious in 21 meetings, while Ecuador have registered wins on 17 occasions. The two sides have drawn in 15 previous matches. Their most recent meeting came in September 2019 when Erick Castillo Arroyo scored a 47th-minute winner.

Team news

For the upcoming clash, Ecuador skipper Enner Valencia will be unavailable due to accumulations of yellow cards. On a rather positive note, Moises Caicedo should be able to return to the starting lineup after missing the match against Brazil.

In the opposite camp, several key players including key Jefferson Farfan and Edison Flores will be out iof contention as a result of injuries. However, a number of them are expected to be fit in time for the Copa America tournament. Meanwhile, midfielder Cristofer Gonzalez has withdrawn from the squad to nurse an injury whereas left-back Miguel Trauco is suspendedafter being sent off against Colombia.

Predicted starting XI

  • Ecuador: Dominguez, Estupiñán, Perlaza, Arboleda, Hincapié; Méndez, Gruezo, Caicedo, Ibarra; Michel Estrada, Mena

  • Peru: Gallese; Advíncula, Ramos, Abram, López; Tapia, Yotún, Pena, Cueva, Lapadula.
