Preview

Arsenal are back in action in the Premier League after kicking off their 2023-24 campaign with a positive result but uninspiring performance. The North London giants will take to the field on Monday, locking horns with Crystal Palace at the tricky Selhurst Park in what promises to be a testing fixture for both sides.

After finishing second in the title race last season despite topping the table for most of the campaign, the goal from Mikel Arteta's side this term will be to win the league. As a result, one could argue the Gunners began on the right foot on Matchday 1.

Saka and Co. hosted Nottingham Forest on their opening day and bossed – for the most part – Steve Cooper's side, with Nketiah and the aforementioned English winger getting on the scoresheet in a much-needed 2-1 victory.

However, despite dominating possession, Arteta's men struggled to create opportunities and, as was the case several times last season, Arsenal endured a nervy ending for failure to kill off the game.

As a result, despite the back-to-back wins over Man City in the Community Shield and Nottingham Forest in the opening round, question marks linger over the North London giants as they needed a deflected shot to take Guardiola's men to penalties and could have dropped points at home on the opening day.

Furthermore, the recent long-term injury to summer signing Jurrien Timber, one of the most promising players during the preseason, has depleted Mikel's squad. And if that was not enough, Arsenal have infamously struggled on Mondays under the Spanish manager and will thus need to be at their best against Palace.

Meanwhile, the hosts began their Premier League campaign with a win as well. In fact, similar to Arsenal, Roy Hodgson's side also managed a slim victory, overcoming newly-promoted side Sheffield United 1-0 in the opening round.

Odsonne Édouard got the only goal of the game, netting the winner in the 49th minute in what was a dominant display from the London-based club. The Eagles will look to build on that result after finishing 11th last season but will face a tough task in this clash.

Last season, these two clubs faced off in the opening game of the campaign, with Palace losing 2-0. The return leg at the Emirates Stadium ended in an even larger defeat, this time suffering a 4-1 loss. Will Eze and Co. return to winning ways against the Gunners? Don't miss this clash.

Team news

Crystal Palace: Michael Olise recently rejected a move to Chelsea and extended his Selhurst Park deal. However, the talented winger remains sidelined due to a severe thigh injury and is not expected back anytime soon. Matheus Franca is struggling with a back issue while Will Hughes has not returned from his knee injury. Marc Guehi, however, should be fit for this game despite coming off in the season opener.

Arsenal: As mentioned earlier, Jurrien Timber is set to miss the majority of the season after suffering an ACL injury in the opening game. Meanwhile, while Oleksandr Zinchenko has returned from injury, the Ukrainian's match sharpness is doubtable. Folarin Balogun, Albert Sambi Lokonga, and Mohamed Elneny are all unavailable due to injury but David Raya is available for selection after completing his loan deal.
