Mexico vs Australia - Team news

Mexico will begin their work aiming for their best-ever performance in a FIFA World Cup following their group stage exit in Qatar. The team led by Jaime Lozano will have to make do without qualifying matches, which means they will have to make the most out of their friendlies to get to that tournament in shape. This time, El Tri will be ready to lock horns against Australia, a team they have not faced in over 20 years.

Mexican fans were left baffled by their federation's decision to sack coach Diego Cocca after their fall from grace in the CONCACAF Nations League. Luckily for them, interim boss Jaime Lozano did a great job in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, leading them to the title with the kind of football fans love. Lozano was named permanent manager after that title, and this will be his first match with his new gig.

For this game, el Tri will rely on veteran players such as Guillermo Ochoa and Houston Dynamo's Héctor Herrera, but the weight of the team will be carried by Feyenoord's Santiago Giménez, Dynamo Moscow midfielder Luis Chávez, and defender Johan Vázquez, who have proved their worth for the Mexicans in recent matches. Mexico's new generation has made fans dubious, but facing Australia should give them some much-needed international experience to make their presence felt with the national team.

On the other side of the pitch, Australia get to this game under coach Graham Arnold, the same boss that took them to the Round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup. The Socceroos have struggled in their last outings as two of their three fixtures in 2023 have ended in defeat, including a two-nil loss to Argentina back in June.

The Aussies will find this match helpful in their search for a key member of their squad. After the retirement of Aaron Mooy, and with Mathew Leckie out due to injury, the team's offensive weight will be shared by Jackson Irvine and Mitchell Duke, the top scorers among the players Arnold called up for this game. Meanwhile, captain Mathew Ryan and defender Aziz Behich are expected to be bossing their teammates around in defense.

  • Two of the games between these teams have ended in draws.

  • Coaches Graham Arnold and Jaime Lozano have faced each other once while in charge of their respective countries' U-23 squads. That game concluded with a 3-2 victory for Mexico.
