Preview

The week is coming to an end but the Euro 2024 qualifiers continue, with the Netherlands returning to action on Sunday in an interesting showdown with Ireland. Ronald Koeman's men make the trip to the Aviva Stadium for this fixture in what will be their final game of this international break.

Ireland will face the daunting task of locking horns with another continental powerhouse for the second time in a row. The Boys in Green enter this tie on the back of their trip to France, with goals from Tchouameni and Thuram condemning them to a 2-0 defeat.

Stephen Kenny was without Evan Ferguson and will have to make do again when they host the Netherlands, which is a huge blow. However, the presence of the Brighton teenage sensation might not have changed much.

So far, Ireland have won only once in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, beating Gibraltar 3-0, but the Emerald Isles did impress in their 1-0 home defeat against France. Can the Boys in Green turn things around and beat the greatest footballing nation to have never won a World Cup?

The Dutch, meanwhile, enter this game on the back of a confidence-boosting victory over Greece, who sat above Ronald Koeman's side in this group prior to kick-off. Oranje beat their opponent 3-0 despite nursing an injury crisis, with De Roon, Gakpo, and Wehorst getting on the scoresheet.

This was a much-needed result as the future under Koeman began looking bleak. There were murmurs of a managerial change but the 60-year-old will look to use this as a catalyst for the future.

Van Dijk and Co. are currently second in the table with six points and while first-placed France are a whopping nine points ahead in first, the French have played two more games than the Dutch.

Les Bleus play Germany in a friendly, meaning the Netherlands can gain ground on Didier Deschamps' side. Furthermore, Oranje's next qualifier after this trip to Ireland is a showdown with France at the Johan Cruyff Arena, which means Koeman's side can move within three points of Mbappe and Co. with a game in hand if they perform well.

Team news

Ireland: Will Keane sadly suffered an abductor injury in the defeat to France and will not feature while Enda Stevens suffered a calf issue. Evan Ferguson, meanwhile, is recovering from an ankle injury

Netherlands: Nathan Ake is suffering from a hamstring issue and will not feature in this tie. However, he is just one player in a growing injury list that includes Memphis Depay, Jurrien Timber, Steven Bergwijn, Sven Botman, Justin Bijlow, Tyrell Malacia, and Brian Brobbey.

Key stats

  • Surprisingly, Ireland boast a lovely record against the Dutch, winning seven times compared to the Netherlands' nine victories.

  • However, all but two of Ireland's wins over Oranje came in international friendlies.
