Hansi Flick's shocking exit from Germany has sparked all sorts of rumours regarding who could take over as Die Mannschaft's new boss. But even if it can be seen as one of the team's wildest dreams, the German side has placed Liverpool's boss as the main name on their wishlist.
Sources close to the team, who will be led by Rudi Völler on Tuesday's game against France, have claimed that Klopp has already been approached to take over as the permanent boss to fill Flick's void, but they have run into a couple of issues that could deter them from that goal.
The first one of those is none other than Klopp's deal with Liverpool, which is set to conclude in 2026. The coach included a buyout clause in his deal, which could be triggered by the German in case they decided Klopp is the way to go. Unfortunately, this first issue will bring an even bigger hurdle to any potential move.
The second issue Germany will face if they try to hire Klopp is none other than the coach's opinion when it comes to leaving Liverpool, which is something he is not willing to do.
"The job of national coach is and would be a great honour - there's no question about that. The problem that stands in the way of the whole thing is my loyalty. Basically, it's an interesting job. But I don't know yet whether I'll do something completely different after I leave Liverpool. I want to keep my options open," Klopp stated to Sky Germany.
If things remain the same, the German Football Union (or DFB) has reportedly shortlisted seven coaches that could take over as Flick's successor, which go from seasoned veterans such as Ralf Rangnick or Louis Van Gaal, all the way to newcomers like Julian Nagelsmann and Xabi Alonso.
According to Sky Germany, Nagelsmann and Oliver Glasner lead the race due to their immediate availability. Other options considered for the job would be LvG, Xabi Alonso, Rangnick, current interim coach Rudi Völler, and legendary defender Matthías Sammer.
Be that as it may, the DFB must make their move quickly to sign a new coach, especially since time is of the essence to come up with a suitable squad that is set to host the 2024 UEFA Euro.
