Preview

Arsenal mark their much-awaited return to the UEFA Champions League, with the Gunners kicking off their 2023-24 campaign against PSV in their first match in this competition in seven years. This 3 p.m. ET showdown is scheduled to take place at the Emirates Stadium as the hosts aim to win on what should be a special night.

While last season's Premier League title race ended in heartbreak for the North London giants, missing out on the crown to Manchester City in the final few rounds despite leading the table for most of the season, Mikel Arteta's men completed one of their other major targets.

Their second-placed finish secured them a return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2015-16, thus ending their long seven-year wait. However, with this comes added pressure as the expectation for Saka and Co. this term will be to compete for the Premier League and go far in Europe, unlike previous seasons under Arteta in the Europa League.

So far, Arsenal have begun the season well, beating rivals Man City on penalties to win the Community Shield and winning all but one of their English top-flight fixtures this term. That one slip-up was an unfortunate draw — and an undeserved one, in the eyes of several fans — at home to 10-man Fulham, with the Gunners missing several opportunities in front of goal while committing errors in their own third.

Furthermore, the English giants enter this clash on the back of two brilliant results, beating Manchester United 3-1 at home before ending their hoodoo at Goodison Park with a 1-0 victory over Everton on Sunday. The performances in both games left a lot to be desired but the Gunners compensated for their lackluster attack by being defensively astute.

Oddly enough, PSV have been drawn in the same group as Arsenal in a European competition for the second time in a row. After missing out on Champions League qualification to Rangers last season, the Dutch heavyweights were demoted to the Europa League and found themselves in the same group as the Gunners.

While the Farmers ultimately finished behind the North London giants in the standings, the visitors got the better of the Gunners on aggregate, losing 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium before triumphing 2-0 in the reverse tie.

Of course, Cody Gakpa and Xavi Simons tore Arteta's men apart in that Philips Stadium encounter and the pair have since left the club for Liverpool and RB Leipzig, respectively. Nonetheless, the away side can look back to last season's achievement for inspiration.

This time around, Peter Bosz's side overcame Rangers to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, beating the Scottish heavyweights 7-3 to return to this competition for the first time since 2018-19. Once again, Arsenal stand in their way but a positive result at the Emirates Stadium should give them the confidence to qualify for the next round and possibly win the group.

Team news

Arsenal: Jurrien Timber remains a long-term absentee after suffering an ACL injury while Gabriel Martinelli picked up a hamstring issue in the Everton game and will miss this tie. Thomas Partey remains on the sideline while Mohamed Elneny has just returned to training after his long layoff. Gabriel Jesus and Reiss Nelson, who have not started a game yet, will be hoping to make the XI while Emile Smith Rowe will be pushing for his first Arsenal appearance this season.

PSV: The visitors have their own concerns as Noa Lang picked up an injury over the weekend. However, the Dutch attacker has still boarded the plane for North London. Hirving Lozano could deputize while Armando Obispo, Fredrik Oppegard, and Mauro Junior are all set to miss this game. Armel Bella-Kotchap, who should be familiar to Arsenal fans due to his time with Southampton last season, should start in defense for the Eredivisie side.

Key stats

  • Arsenal's last game in this competition ended in a 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich (10-2 on aggregate).

  • The Gunners have picked up two away clean sheets so far this season but have managed only one at home in their last 11 Emirates Stadium outings.

  • PSV are unbeaten in 26 matches.

  • The last time these two sides met in the UEFA Champions League was in 2006-07, with the Dutch side winning this round of 16 encounter 2-1 on aggregate.

  • However, the Farmers have only scored once away to Arsenal in history.

  • The Gunners are unbeaten in their last four home encounters with PSV.

  • However, Luuk de Jong and Co. were the only team to beat the North London giants in the Europa League last season — Sporting CP only knocked out Arsenal on penalties after drawing both home and away.
