Preview

The North London Derby is finally here! Tottenham Hotspur, led by the impressive Ange Postecoglou, take on the high-flying Arsenal on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium in a game that could end one of these club's unbeaten start to the 2023-24 Premier League.

The Gunners boast the home advantage and one look at the head-to-head record shows that the hosts typically win this derby. Furthermore, Mikel Arteta's men enter this clash high on confidence following their UEFA Champions League win over PSV and should thus fancy their odds of beating their neighbors.

Wednesday's 4-0 victory over the Eredivisie leaders was Arsenal's first Champions League game since 2017, and the Gunners marked their return to this competition in spectacular fashion, with Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus, and Martin Odegaard all getting on the scoresheet.

This was just one of three crucial results, with Arsenal beating Everton 1-0 last weekend to end their terrible record at Goodison Park while overcoming Manchester United 3-1 just before the international break.

Injuries have taken a toll at the Emirates Stadium recently but Arteta's men have remained resolute. A disappointing 2-2 draw at home to 10-man Fulham has been their only slip-up so far, with the Gunners' profligacy in front of goal and unusual defensive errors costing them two points.

However, a lack of creativity has been a recurring theme for the home side in the Premier League this season. The introduction of Leandro Trossard has injected efficiency into Arteta's front three but it will be interesting to see whether the Gunners will face similar issues at home to Tottenham.

Spurs, meanwhile, have been the talk of the town this season and that is mainly due to Ange Postecoglou. The Australian tactician has swiftly turned the club's fortunes around, with Tottenham going from a team frustrated with Antonio Conte's negative and uninspiring approach to the game to playing free-flowing football.

The former Celtic boss kicked things off with a 2-2 draw away to Brentford in the opening game of this season but the North London outfit have gone from strength to strength since, with things culminating in their phenomenal comeback win over Sheffield last weekend.

Tottenham found themselves 1-0 down at home to the newly promoted side until the eighth minute of stoppage time. However, in the span of two minutes, Spurs not only managed to equalize but also scored the winner, with Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski getting on the scoresheet to seal a 2-1 comeback victory.

This takes their record this season in the Premier League to four wins out of five. Their defeat against Fulham in the second round of the Carabao Cup proved there is still work to be done. However, the visitors have exhibited unity and have proven themselves capable of scoring against anyone.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see how Postecoglou approaches his first North London Derby. So far, his team have shown aggression and front-footedness. However, as PSV found out on Thursday, that could get you punished at the Emirates Stadium.

Team news

Arsenal: Gabriel Martinelli suffered a hamstring injury in the trip to Everton and is expected to miss this game, thus joining Thomas Partey, Mohamed Elneny, and long-term absentee Jurrien Timber on the sidelines. Other than that, it is a question of team selection, with fans wondering whether David Raya or Aaron Ramsdale will start in goal. Fabio Vieira and Takehiro Tomiyasu will also be hoping to make the starting eleven.

Tottenham: Arsenal are not the only ones dealing with a long-term injury as the experienced Ivan Perisic unfortunately suffered a serious ACL injury and could miss the rest of the season.  Bryan Gil, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ryan Sessegnon, and Giovani Lo Celso are also sidelined. It will be interesting to see whether Postecoglou plays Son Heung-min down the middle or brings Richarlison back into the starting lineup following his equalizer vs. Sheffield.

Key stats

  • This is the first North London Derby in which both teams enter the game unbeaten.

  • Arsenal have won their last two encounters with Spurs and will look to win three in a row for the first time in 30 years.

  • These two clubs have faced 193 times before, with the Gunners winning 81 while Tottenham have triumphed 61 times (D51).

  • The visitors have won only once at the Emirates Stadium in Premier League history.

  • That sole win came in November 2010, meaning Spurs are winless in their last 12 Premier League visits to Arsenal (D4, L8).

  • However, while Maddison and Co. have conceded only one more goal than Arteta's men so far, Postecoglou's side have outscored their rivals by an impressive four goals.

  • The hosts kept a clean sheet in their Emirates Stadium clash with PSV in the UEFA Champions League. That was their first home clean sheet of the season.
