Preview

Inter Miami return to action this weekend, with the Herons traveling to Orlando City for the last edition of El Clásico del Sol, the Florida derby, in this MLS campaign. Both teams face completely different circumstances in the race to make the playoffs, with one team sitting in the upper echelons of the table while the other is facing a race against time.

It is not a secret that Orland City are second in the table in the Eastern Conference. In fact, the Lions have already secured their spot in the playoffs with five games to spare.

The hosts boast 50 points but that does not mean there's nothing left to pursue. The Florida outfit are 12 behind conference leaders Cincinnati and are thus unlikely to catch them but with Colombus sitting only one point behind in third, Óscar Pareja's side must be wary.

Orlando City lost their most recent outing, going 2-0 down away to New York City. Nonetheless, they beat Columbus 4-3 in the game before that and have a fantastic record at their home stadium, the Exploria Stadium.

Inter Miami, on the other hand, are facing a race against the clock to make the playoffs. Currently, the Herons sit second from the bottom of the table with 31 points. That is five points behind the last playoff spot with only six games to go.

Fortunately, Tata Martino's side enter this tie on the back of their 4-0 victory over Sporting KC but even that fixture came at a cost as Jordi Alba and, even more importantly, Lionel Messi picked up injuries.

The manager has already revealed that the pair will not feature against Orlando, which is a huge blow, but the boss will have one eye on the Houston Dynamo clash in the U.S. Open Cup final next week.

La Pulga has missed other fixtures, including the 5-2 defeat away to Atlanta United, hence the concerns. Furthermore, Orlando's home form makes them the favorites, and with the Herons fighting to make the playoffs, a negative result could end their hopes.

Team news

Orlando SC: Favian Loyola could miss this tie while Antonio Carlos is suffering from a lower leg injury. Felipe Martins and Martin Ojeda were benched for the defeat to New York City but could return to the lineup.

Inter Miami: As mentioned earlier, Jordi Alba and Lionel Messi are injured and will not feature in this tie. Corentin Jean, Franco Negri, Gregore, and Ian Fray all look set to miss this game as well.

Key stats

  • This will be the third clash between these two clubs this season.

  • Their most recent encounter was in the Leagues Cup, with Inter Miami winning 3-1.

  • However, Orlando SC have never lost at home to their rivals.

  • The Lions could equal their longest-ever winning streak at home (5) with a victory in this game and could surpass their highest points tally in the regular season (51).
