Preview

Two of Italy's greatest teams face off on Sunday as AC Milan prepare to host bitter rivals Juventus. Both clubs are in the top three, which means this will be a crucial tie in what should be another exciting Scudetto race.

The Rossoneri have the advantage heading into this game. Pioli's men entered this round as the league leaders, and while rivals they have temporarily been leapfrogged by Inter following the Nerazzurri's 3-0 victory over Torino, Leao and Co. can reclaim the top spot with a win on Sunday.

Form favors the Rossoneri, albeit slightly, with AC Milan boasting a six-game unbeaten run since their embarrassing Milan Derby defeat to Inter. Of those six games, two ended in draws but both fixtures came in the UEFA Champions League, playing out a nil-nil stalemate against Newcastle and Dortmund.

In Serie A, Pioli's men have won four in a row, including their most recent fixture, a nail-biting 1-0 victory over Genoa just before the international break. That win saw Mike Maignan get sent off in the final minutes, with Olivier Giroud unforgettably deputizing for his Frenchman in goal and helping his team register a clean sheet.

As a result, the hosts boast 21 points from their first eight games and could go top with 24 points, two more than Inter, with a win on Sunday. However, despite boasting the home advantage, beating Juventus will not be a walk in the park.

Unlike AC Milan, Juventus have suffered a few slip-ups in the league recently, including their 4-2 loss at Sassuolo roughly a month ago. Then there was the nil-nil stalemate at Atalanta at the beginning of this month, hence why the Old Lady trail the Rossoneri in the standings.

However, that gap is only four points, which means a win on Sunday would see Allegri's men move within a single point of the Milan giants. The visitors will face a better attack but the Bianconeri can look to their defensive solidity for inspiration, having kept a clean sheet in their last three games.

However, Italy's most successful club has been rocked by a handful of issues, including — but not limited to — Paul Pogba's doping scandal. Since then, talented midfielder Nicolò Fagioli has been suspended for seven months by the Italian football federation due to betting breaches, thus robbing Allegri of another player.

Nonetheless, the club have shown resilience under their current tactician. While the manager has been tipped to get sacked, things have improved for Juventus this calendar year and a victory at the San Siro could announce their title challenge.

Team news

AC Milan: Mike Maignan is suspended while Marco Sportiello is injured, meaning Antonio Mirante will deputize in goal. Theo Hernandez is also suspended while Samu Chukwueze and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are unlikely to feature due to injuries.

Juventus: Fagioli and Pogba are unavailable but Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic have returned to fitness. Danilo and Alex Sandro, however, are out for this tie.

Key stats

  • AC Milan are on a five-game unbeaten run against Juventus and haven't gone six unbeaten since 1989.

  • Additionally, Pioli could become the first manager to go six Serie A games unbeaten against Juventus.

  • Juventus' goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is tied for the second-most number of clean sheets this season with four.
