The 2023 NWSL final will produce a first-time winner as OL Reign and NJ/NY Gotham face off in the showpiece event on November 11th.

On Saturday, a new champion of the NWSL will be crowned as OL Reign and Gotham battle for the coveted prize. Both teams had to overcome some major odds to get to this juncture, as each side were pitted against a tournament favorite in the semi-finals - and to make things more complicated, were playing on the road.

However, one of the fascinating things about the beautiful game is its unpredictability. Last weekend saw some major upsets taking place in the NWSL, with Gotham beating Portland Thorns 1-0 to book their first ever appearance in a NWSL final thanks to an extra time goal by Katie Stengel. Then, a few hours later, the Reign did likewise, downing San Diego Wave by the same score-line thanks to a strike from Veronica Latsko to set up their first ever finals appearance.

This game will be an interesting one for two veteran players. Both OL Reign's Megan Rapinoe and Gotham's Ali Krieger are set to retire at the end of this season, but unfortunately, only one of these stalwarts of the women's game will finish her career with the coveted prize in her trophy cabinet. Rapinoe, who recently also called time on her international career, certainly does have a knack for scoring against Gotham - to date, the 38-year-old has 13 goals in 13 career appearances against a very familiar opponent.

Gotham's journey to this juncture has been quite impressive. Last season saw them finish in last place, and flash-foward a year later, they are technically 90 minutes (or perhaps more) from being crowned champions of the NWSL. Of course, the Reign will be hoping that third time will be a charm in the NWSL finals after losing in both the 2014 and 2015 editions of the competition.

In the regular season, both teams have one win each as they won at each others' home ground. Notably, Gotham's 4-1 demolition of OL Reign this past May marked their first success in five prior meetings; prior to this, the Reign had won their last four meetings against Gotham.

As such, there will be plenty on the line when these two sides square off in what should be an entertaining game for fans and neutrals alike. Will Gotham, just a year later after finishing in last place, cap off a strong season by winning the NWSL title? Or will Reign, led by Rapinoe, win their first NWSL title in their third attempt?
