Preview

Barcelona returns to action in La Liga just days after securing progression to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 but will be in for a tough test this weekend. The Blaugrana, who have been struggling for form recently, take on rivals Atletico Madrid in a game that could kick one team's title challenge back to life while handing the other a huge early blow.

The Spanish champions enter this tie on the back of their 2-1 win over Porto during the midweek, a result that helped them qualify for the UEFA Champions League knockout round. Not only did they come back from a goal down, but the Catalan giants also made it out of the group stage for the first time under Xavi, having suffered two group-stage exits under his helm so far.

Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix, both of whom are on loan, scored in that win, bringing much-needed confidence back to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Barcelona's current home venue. However, Xavi's men still need to improve drastically to maintain their title defense.

In the Spanish top flight, Lewandowski and Co. have dropped points in four out of their last eight matches. This includes a 2-1 defeat at home to Real Madrid and a disappointing 1-1 draw away to Rayo Vallecano in their most recent fixture.

Injuries have played a huge part, but the pressure has been piling up on Xavi due to his side's below-par performance this season. The hosts are still fourth in the table, meaning all hope is not lost, but a defeat would leave them seven points behind Real Madrid and Girona — both teams played and won on Saturday.

Atletico is in a similar situation. Diego Simeone's men are on the exact same points as Barcelona (31), but with the Madrid giants sitting slightly ahead in third. Meanwhile, a defeat against the Blaugrana would leave the visitors seven points behind Spain's top two teams.

However, form slightly favors the away side. Unlike the Catalan giants, Los Rojiblancos have dropped points in only two of their last eight fixtures, suffering a shock 2-1 defeat against Las Palmas a month ago. Furthermore, Griezmann and Co. have secured some crucial victories, beating Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Villarreal in their last 10 domestic games.

Furthermore, Atletico also enters this game on the back of a crucial midweek victory in Europe, beating Feyenoord 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League to qualify for the round of 16.

Despite this, Simeone's men must remember what happened last season against Barcelona. Atletico suffered back-to-back defeats, and unless the visitors are at their best, a repeat could occur.

Team news

Barcelona: Marc-Andre ter Stegen remains injured with a back injury, meaning Inaki Pena will start in goal again. Gavi, meanwhile, is a long-term injury after suffering an ACL tear. It will be interesting to see whether Cancelo starts ahead of Balde for this game.

Atletico: Pablo Barrios has been sidelined with a serious injury while Thomas Lemar and Vitolo remain unavailable. Fortunately, Memphis Depay and Reinildo have returned while Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata remain fit and in form in front of goal.

Key stats
