Preview

Manchester City are back in action this midweek as the Cityzens aim to return to winning ways when they visit the high-flying Aston Villa on Wednesday. Unai Emery's men, on the flip side, will be looking to register a statement win over the defending champions in what has so far been a roller-coaster Premier League season.

The visitors aren't the only ones looking to bounce back as Ollie Watkins and Co. enter this game on the back of a disappointing draw. The Villans faced Bournemouth in their most recent fixture and despite these two teams sitting on opposite ends of the table, Emery's men were fortunate to come away with a 2-2 draw.

The in-form Watkins scored a 90-minute equalizer to rescue his side a point after conceding twice against Antoine Semenyo and Dominic Solanke — though the Cherries were fortunate not to have a man sent off.

This result brought an end to Aston Villa's four-game winning streak across all competitions but Emery's men have lost only once in their last 10 Premier League games. As a result, the home side sit fourth in the table, two points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham, and could leapfrog Man City in the table with a win — Watkins and Co. can overtake Liverpool as well if the Reds stumble against Sheffield.

However, beating the Cityzens is easier said than done, and while Guardiola's men have stumbled recently, Manchester City have not lost a game since suffering back-to-back defeat at Wolves and current league leaders Arsenal.

Nonetheless, the visitors' form has taken a turn for the worse, with Haaland and Co. drawing their last three league games in a row, the first being that 4-4 thriller away to Chelsea before the international break.

After that came a 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool, which was an acceptable — albeit not ideal — result given that Klopp's men are also title contenders. However, the weekend draw away to Tottenham frustrated the reigning champions as they three away a one-goal lead on two separate occasions to suffer a 3-3 stalemate.

Man City conceded first thanks to a brilliant Son Heung-min goal but the South Korean sensation scored an own goal a few minutes later to level things out. Phil Foden got on the scoresheet, followed by second-half substitute Jack Grealish, but two goals from Lo Celso and Kulusevski meant the two sides shared the points.

A controversial refereeing decision marred that match, with the match official failing to play the advantage and denying Jack Grealish a one-v-one with the Tottenham keeper right before the final whistle. Nonetheless, Man City's performance raised questions as they conceded more than once yet again while squandering many opportunities to kill off the game.

The reigning champions are now six points behind current leaders Arsenal, though the Gunners played on Tuesday, beating Luton Town 4-3 with a last-gasp Declan Rice winner. Guardiola's men cannot afford to drop more points, and with Liverpool facing relegation-battling Sheffield United, the Cityzens could see their two closest rivals pull further ahead in the title race.

Team news

Aston Villa: Bertrand Traore, Emiliano Buendia, and Tyrone Mings are all injured. As a result, Diego Carlos and Pau Torres will be Emery's center-back pairing while Boubacar Kamara is back from suspension.

Man City: Kevin de Bruyne remains sidelined while Jack Grealish and Rodri are unavailable due to suspension from an accumulation of yellow cards. The absence of the Spanish midfielder in particular is worrying as Pep's men struggle without him. As a result, Matheus Nunes could return and join Mateo Kovacic in midfield.
