Preview

Tottenham returns to action on Thursday, with the North London heavyweights taking on London rivals West Ham in an interesting Premier League showdown. Spurs boast the home advantage in this 8:15 p.m. ET encounter but must overcome some recent hiccups.

Ange Postecoglou's side began the season extremely well and were top of the table not too long ago. However, things have taken a turn for the worse recently, mainly due to an injury crisis, with the club at risk of slipping out of the top five if they do not return to winning ways.

The North London outfit enters the game on the back of their thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City, which was a positive result as Spurs came back from a goal down on two separate occasions to pick up a point at the Etihad Stadium. Son Heung-min, Giovani Lo Celso, and Dejan Kulusevski got on the scoresheet, but this game ultimately ended in a draw, securing Tottenham a mere point. This means they remain winless in their last four Premier League outings, having lost three in a row before the Man City draw.

As a result, Son and Co. are left with 27 points after 14 games. Newcastle, who is in seventh, is only a point behind while Manchester United has moved level on points with Spurs — however, the Red Devils have played a game extra, beating Chelsea 2-1 on Wednesday.

Additionally, Postecoglou's men will be in action this weekend as well, hosting the Magpies in a tricky Sunday showdown, meaning a win against West Ham is necessary, or Tottenham might slip into a free fall.

The home side is not the only one entering this game on the back of a disappointing result as West Ham drew 1-1 at home to Crystal Palace in their most recent outing, a result that ended their four-game winning streak across all competitions.

Summer signing Mohammed Kudus scored for the Hammers after only 13 minutes, but the London side was unable to add to that lead, with Palace equalizing slightly before the hour mark, leaving David Moyes frustrated.

Nonetheless, Bowen and Co. are only six points behind Thursday's opponents, and while West Ham has won only three of their last 10 Premier League fixtures, the UEFA Europa Conference League holders will take confidence from their European form.

Unlike Spurs, the Hammers are in the UEFA Europa League and have won all but one of the five games they have played so far. As a result, Moyes' men are through to the knockout stage in Europe and will want to secure a precious victory over Tottenham when they visit the North London outfit.

Team news

Tottenham: Spurs are suffering from a horrible injury crisis as they are without  Rodrigo Bentancur, James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Pape Matar Sarr, Manor Solomon, Ivan Perisic, and Ryan Sessegnon. Meanwhile, Eric Dier is a doubt. However, Cristian Romero has returned from suspension and should start.

West Ham: Michail Antonio is injured while question marks linger over Kurt Zouma after suffering a house robbery. Jarrod Bowen is back and fit and is set to join Lucas Paqueta in Moyes' lineup.

Key stats

  • West Ham have lost three of their last four visits to Tottenham.

  • Spurs lost their last London derby 4-1 to Chelsea and will not want to lose back-to-back London derbies since November 2004.

  • Ange Postecoglou has overseen back-to-back home defeats and is at risk of losing three home matches in succession for the first time since August 2018 when in charge of Japanese club Yokohama F. Marinos.

  • The Hammers were the first Premier League away team to win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and will look to end their four-game winless run at Spurs.
