With the other competition changing to be held every four years, FIFA decided to revive the tournament last played in 2024 to fill that void.

Apparently, FIFA will not keep cashing in on fans' desire to watch football all year long, as they have decided to add yet another club competition to an already crowded calendar.

Football's governing body has decided to relaunch the defunct Intercontinental Cup to try and fill the void left by the FIFA Club World Cup, which will now be played every four years by 32 teams. The Intercontinental Cup was played between 1960 and 2004 by the winner of the Copa Libertadores and the UEFA Champions League holders, but the tournament was paused to boost the Club World Cup, which led to its eventual disappearance.

Now, FIFA have determined a new format to this competition, which will see the winners of all confederations facing each other in single-round ties. The tournament will include two preliminary stages, which will be played by the African champion or the AFC title holders against the winners of the Oceania Football Confederation. Then, the winner will go on to face either the CAF winners or the AFC champions, which will complete Stage A. The start of the competition for the CAF and AFC teams will be determined by a draw.

Meanwhile, Stage B will always be played between the Concacaf Champions Cup winners and the Copa Libertadores champions. The winners of Stage A and Stage B will go on to the final, where the UEFA Champions League winners will await.

The first five games will be drawn to determine the hosts, meaning that the competition will be held at different venues. Meanwhile, the title match will be held at a neutral venue. The new competition will kick off on December 10, 2024, and is set to come to an end on December 18.

It is yet to be seen how confederations react to this decision by FIFA, although there could be some that are willing to add more games to their calendar to increase brand awareness across the world. Nonetheless, reactions by all players to another competition may not be as calm, as many footballers and coaches have complained about schedule congesture when it comes to all the tournaments that are played in world football and the growing number of injuries all over the world.
