Newcastle's fall from grace in the Premier League and early exit from the UEFA Champions League has prompted some of its historic figures to step up and ask for reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window.
The Magpies have lost four out of their last five Premier League fixtures, including a 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. With that in mind, and trying not to pin the blame on goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, some believe that a reliable option to guard Newcastle's net is available on a free transfer, which has seen the voices surrounding the club asking desperately for his arrival.
The man in question is David De Gea, who left Manchester United last summer after failing to sign a contract extension with the Red Devils. Now, with Newcastle's issues rising, the request to sign the Spaniard has come from none other than Alan Shearer.
Considering his reputation as the club's all-time top scorer, Shearer urged to speed things up when it comes to signing De Gea, especially since the team's season could see the huge investment by their Saudi Arabian owners going down the drain when the 2023-24 campaign comes to a close.
"I think Newcastle need a goalkeeper, and De Gea is out there. I know the salary would be huge but they wouldn't have to pay a fee for him," Shearer stated on BBC Radio 5 Live.
The former striker went on even further by stating another key role Newcastle need to fill, although it might be slightly more complicated to recruit a reliable footballer there.
"I would agree goalkeeper and centre forward would be the two main priorities for me. But good luck trying to find a good centre forward that you can bring in for a decent amount of money," Shearer added.
After Tuesday's loss, Newcastle are ranked ninth in the Premier League. Their dip in form has coincided with Nick Pope's absence, which is why the former Atlético and Manchester United man has been named as a suitable option to boost the Magpies. Nonetheless, it will not be an easy negotiation to handle.
