Preview

Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City take to the field in the English top-flight for the first time in 2024, with Guardiola's men facing a tricky test in Matchweek 21 of the competition. The Cityzens will travel to St. James' Park to lock horns with a desperate Newcastle side on Saturday as both clubs go in search of the precious three points.

The Magpies entered this season with tremendous confidence, having qualified for the UEFA Champions League and reached the Carabao Cup final last term. However, the Saudi-owned side are in freefall currently mainly due to an injury crisis, with a whopping 10 first-team players being unavailable — though one is absent due to suspension.

As a result, Isak and Co. have fallen off a cliff, losing all but one of their last six games in the league. If that is not bad already, Newcastle could drop to 10th in the table should they suffer a defeat and close rivals Chelsea triumph over Fulham earlier that same day.

The Magpies have lost their last three Premier League matches in a row, starting with a shock 1-0 defeat against relegation-battling Luton Town before being undone by Nottingham Forest and, most recently, Liverpool.

Howe's men managed to score twice at Anfield, a feat neither Arsenal, Manchester United, West Ham, or Aston Villa were able to achieve. However, Newcastle conceded goals against Mohamed Salah twice, Curtis Jones, and Cody Gakpo en route to a disappointing 4-2 loss.

Additionally, the Saudi-owned club crashed out of the UEFA Champions League group stage late last year and are currently in the midst of a crisis. Nonetheless, the hosts have been nearly impeccable on home soil this season and will look to take advantage of the electric St. James' Park crown when the reigning champions come rolling into town.

Manchester City, meanwhile, were in a crisis of their own a few weeks ago. Between mid-November and mid-December, the defending champions picked up only one win in six in the Premier League, with many wondering whether Pep's men let their foot off the pedal after winning the treble last season.

However, things have drastically improved since then, especially following the disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace, with the Cityzens winning their last five matches in a row across all competitions. The UEFA Champions League holders jetted off to Saudi Arabia for the FIFA Club World Cup straight after that Palace draw and won the title with a perfect record, beating Urawa Reds in the semifinals and Fluminese in the final, and have gone from strength to strength since.

The treble winners beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park in their first match following their FIFA Club World Cup victory before brushing Sheffield United aside in their final match of 2023. Foden and Co. have also been in action in 2024, taking on Huddersfield in the FA Cup and thrashing the Terriers 5-0, but the focus shifts back to the league.

St. James' Park is no easy ground. Irrespective of Newcastle's injury crisis and atrocious form, the visitors should be in for a tricky test. Nonetheless, a win would take the defending champions within two points of current leaders Liverpool, who won't be in action in the league until January 21.

Team news

Newcastle: As mentioned earlier, Eddie Howe has been in the midst of a selection crisis for most of the season, and it only appears to be getting worse. Sandro Tonali continues to serve his 10-month suspension while Joelinton became the latest player to suffer an injury, thus joining Nick Pope, Matt Target, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, Callum Wilson, Joe Willock, Elliot Anderson, and Javier Manquillo on the sidelines.

Man City: The Cityzens have welcomed back star midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, who made his return in the win over Sheffield. However, Erling Haaland will remain sidelined for the rest of the month. Additionally, John Stones has not recovered from an ankle injury while Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji are doubts for this tie. Bernardo Silva and Kalvin Phillips, however, have recovered from illness and are available for selection.

Key stats

  • Newcastle have won only once in their last 32 Premier League clashes with Manchester City.

  • The Cityzens, meanwhile, triumphed 26 times during that same period.

  • The Magpies are Man City's favorite opponents, winning more games (30), scoring more goals (98), and keeping more clean sheets (22) against the Saudi-owned side than any other club.

  • However, Guardiola's men are winless in their last two trips to St. James' Park, losing 1-0 in the Carabao Cup earlier this season while drawing 3-3 in the league last season.

  • Additionally, Eddie Howe's men have won all but two of their Premier League games at St. James' Park this season.
