Preview

Arsenal return to action in the Premier League this weekend, traveling to Burnley in what promises to be a crucial week for the Gunners. The title challengers head to Turf Moor on Saturday knowing anything but a win will be catastrophic as Mikel Arteta's men look to make up ground on their rivals.

Saka and Co. enter this game on the back of outstanding back-to-back wins over Premier League leaders Liverpool and UEFA Europa Conference League holders West Ham, beating them 3-1 and 6-0 respectively. In fact, since returning from a two-week break in Dubai, Arteta's side have been unstoppable, winning four games in a row, scoring a whopping 16 goals, and conceding only twice.

This includes a 5-0 triumph over Crystal Palace, the aforementioned thrashing of David Moyes' side, and a convincing performance in the 2-1 victory at Nottingham Forest. Nonetheless, Arsenal still find themselves at a disadvantage in the title race.

The Gunners had won only one in five Premier League games from early to late December and as a result, Arsenal are playing catch-up. As mentioned earlier, the club are third in the table, two points behind current leaders Liverpool and while they are level on points with second-placed Manchester City, Guardiola's men have a game in hand.

And this is why this trip to Turf Moor is crucial. Liverpool and Man City will play twice between now and Arsenal's next English top-flight game — a home clash with Newcastle next Saturday. The Merseyside giants face Brentford this weekend and Luton Town this midweek while the Cityzens lock horns with Chelsea and Brentford during that same time.

The North London giants must not simply keep up pace with those two but also be ready to take advantage of a possible slip-up. Brentford, Luton Town, and Chelsea are three tricky sides, meaning the Community Shield holders cannot afford anything but the three points at Turf Moor.

However, Arteta's side will also be in action this midweek — but not in the Premier League — and will have one eye on that fixture. The English outfit travel to Porto for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 showdown with Porto, scheduled for Wednesday, as the club aim to make the quarterfinals for the first time since 2010.

Burnley, on the other hand, are fighting for Premier League survival. Despite a fantastic campaign in the Championship under Vincent Kompany, the Clarets appear destined to drop straight back down after only one season in the English top flight.

The hosts are second from bottom and are level on points with Sheffield United, who were also just promoted, with both sides boasting 13 points after 24 games. Above them are Everton in 17th but the Toffees have a six-point advantage over Burnley, hence why relegation seems inevitable for the Clarets.

And to make things worse, Fofana and Co. have not won a game in 2024, with their last victory being the 2-0 triumph over Fulham in late December. Since then, they have lost five out of seven, with the other two fixtures ending in draws against Luton and Fulham.

Kompany has already met Arteta already this season. However, that game did not go well for the Man City icon, with Burnley losing 3-1 thanks to goals from Trossard, Saliba, and Zinchenko. The Clarets have the home advantage this time around but Arsenal are in better shape, making this a tricky test for the hosts.

Team news

Burnley: Maxime Esteve picked up an injury in the Clarets' recent trip to Anfield but could recover in time for this tie. However,  Nathan Redmond and Luca Koleosho are unavailable while Lyle Foster and Jordan Beyer remain on the sidelines.

Arsenal: Thomas Partey and Fabio Vieira are both nearing a return but this game comes too soon for both. Tomiyasu, meanwhile, missed the win over West Ham but could make the squad. However, Smith Rowe, Zinchenko, and Jesus remain doubtful and are thus unlikely to feature.

Key stats

  • Arsenal boast a 100 percent record in the Premier League in 2024, winning every single top-flight game they have played this calendar year.

  • Burnley, meanwhile, have not beaten a club in the top half of the table so far this season.

  • The Gunners have lost only once in 17 Premier League encounters with Burnley (W12, D4), with that sole defeat coming in December 2020.

  • The Clarets have not beaten the Gunners in Arsenal's last 10 Premier League visits to Turf Moor (D5, L5).

  • Kompany's side have picked up only five points in 12 Turf Moor outings in the Premier League this season, which is the worst home record in the Premier League in 2023-24.
