Preview

Manchester United are gearing up for a crucial fixture in the race to qualify for UEFA Champions League football next season. The Red Devils, fresh off a much-needed result against Aston Villa, prepare to visit Luton Town on Sunday knowing that they can slash the deficit over fifth-placed Tottenham.

Erik ten Hag's men have picked up form recently and that culminated with a brilliant weekend victory over Aston Villa, with the English giants beating Unai Emery's high-flying side 2-1 at Villa Park.

Rasmus Hojlund continued his fine goalscoring streak in the Premier League, finding the back of the net for the fifth game in a row to break the deadlock in less than 20 minutes. Douglas Luiz equalized for Aston Villa in the second half but Scott McTominay scored in the final few minutes of normal time to secure the three points.

This was Manchester United's fourth consecutive victory across all competitions, with the last three coming in the English top flight. As a result, Rashford and Co. have made up tremendous ground in the top-four race.

However, Ten Hag's men still have a huge disadvantage to overcome. Aston Villa, who currently occupy the fourth and final UEFA Champions League spot, are eight points ahead thanks to their recent victory over Fulham but the 20-time English champions can pull closer to fifth-placed Tottenham.

The North London outfit were beaten 2-1 at home by Wolves, meaning Manchester United could move within three points of Spurs this weekend. While not a foregone conclusion, this would be brilliant for a club that appeared destined for a mid-table finish earlier this campaign.

Luton Town, on the flip side, are in a relegation battle and are fighting to put as much distance as possible between themselves and the danger zone. Currently, the Hatters sit just outside the bottom three by a single point and have a game or two in hand over their nearest rivals.

The biggest concern for Rob Edwards' crew right now is Everton. The Toffees sit in 18th and while the Merseyside outfit have played a game extra, Luton Town boast a mere one-point advantage over Sean Dyche's crew.

Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, who sit just above the hosts, are four points ahead. As a result, Adebayo and Co. cannot afford another slip-up.

The newly-promoted side began 2024 with a fantastic six-game unbeaten run after losing 2-3 at home to Chelsea in their final match of 2023. However, this streak came to an end last weekend when Luton Town suffered a shocking 3-1 loss against Sheffield.

Nonetheless, the hosts have been a thorn in the side of England's Bix Six clubs, holding Liverpool to a draw while Man City, Arsenal, Man United, Spurs, and Chelsea were only able to beat this side by a mere one-goal margin. Meanwhile, Brighton and Newcastle were both taken to task while the Red Devils are next in line for the Kenilworth Road test.

Team news

Luton Town: Marvelous Nakamba, Mads Andersen, and Tom Lockyer are all unavailable, with the latter suffering cardiac arrest earlier this season and facing a potential end to his career. Teden Mengi, meanwhile, should be fit to start.

Manchester United: Lisandro Martinez picked up a worrying knee injury in the win over West Ham and is unavailable for this tie, joining Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tyrell Malacia, and Anthony Martial on the sidelines. Luke Shaw picked up a knock in the win over Aston Villa and while he is a doubt for this tie, the Englishman's issue is not serious.

Key stats

  • Manchester United boast an 11-game winning streak against newly-promoted clubs.

  • With six victories on the road, only Man City and Arsenal (both eight) boast a better away record in the Premier League this season than the Red Devils.

  • Luton Town have won three of their last seven Premier League matches.

  • The Hatters have scored in their last 11 league games, with only Tottenham (36) boasting a longer goalscoring run in the Premier League by a current top-flight club.
