It is official: Thomas Tuchel's dream spell in charge of Bayern Munich is over.

This was announced by the German giants following a rough spell that saw the defending Bundesliga champions lose three games in a row, first going 3-0 down away to league leaders Leverkusen before being beaten by Lazio in the UEFA Champions League and VFL Bochum in the top flight.

This comes less than a year after he was appointed head coach, having replaced Julian Nagelsmann in March 2023. The 50-year-old is under contract until 2025 but with Bayern Munich facing a trophyless season for the first time since 2011-12, a split was inevitable.

The club announced that this was a mutual decision and that the former Chelsea boss will remain in charge until the end of the season before the Bavarians appoint a replacement in the summer. This move is significant for the German giants, who can technically still win the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League, and other European giants, namely Barcelona and Liverpool.

For Liverpool, this is tremendously worrying for one main reason: the Merseyside giants will now have a tremendous competitor for the signature of highly-rated manager Xabi Alonso.

The Premier League giants will also have to appoint a new manager this summer after Jurgen Klopp announced he will be leaving Anfield once the current season ends. Alonso, the mastermind behind Bayer Leverkusen's fantastic Bundesliga title charge, is said to be their priority.

However, Bayern Munich have also made the Spanish tactician their no.1 target and will likely go all out to bring the Basque talent to the Allianz Arena. He is contracted at Leverkusen until 2026, but according to the rumors, his German employers will not stand in his way if he asks to leave.

Additionally, Real Madrid are said to be keeping an eye on Alonso and might anoint him as the heir to Carlo Ancelotti, with the Italian's contract running out in two years. This complicates matters for Liverpool.

As for Barcelona, this presents them with a major boost. The Catalan giants are another continental powerhouse on the lookout for a new manager after Xavi Hernandez announced he will be stepping down this summer, which means Thomas Tuchel's sacking offers them another option, as explained in a recent article by the Athletic.

Roberto de Zerbi and Hansi Flick have been heavily linked with the job but the Blaugrana were short on options. Tuchel, meanwhile, is said to be a fan of the Spanish giants and was linked with Barcelona by Catalan newspaper Sport prior to this latest development.
