Preview

Liverpool and Manchester City lock horns this weekend in what will be the final showdown between iconic managers Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola in the Premier League. This fixture, scheduled for 10:15 a.m. ET at the dreaded Anfield stadium, is a must-win tie for both sides given this season's nail-biting title race.

Jurgen Klopp has already gotten his hands on silverware this season, lifting the Carabao Cup roughly two weeks ago. However, while his team are chasing the quadruple yet again, the jewel in the crown in his final season at Anfield would undoubtedly be the Premier League crown.

The Merseyside giants are currently top of the table and are thus one of the favorites to win the title. However, things are tight at the top, with Klopp's men boasting a mere one-point advantage over their nearest rivals. That nearest rival just so happens to be Manchester City.

Additionally, Arsenal entered this round sitting only two points adrift of Liverpool, meaning Klopp must also be wary of Arteta's side. Fortunately, form is on the German's side, with the hosts winning the last seven fixtures in a row across all competitions.

Furthermore, the Reds have lost only once in their last 20 Premier League fixtures, with that sole defeat being the 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium marred by uncanny individual errors from Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.

However, Guardiola's side will put this run to the test. The last time Salah and Co. locked horns with the Cityzens, Liverpool came away with a point. However, Klopp's men have the home advantage, and with their Egyptian superstar returning from injury, the hosts should enter this game with confidence.

Manchester City, on the flip side, are just as desperate to win this game. However, the defending champions will have to overcome their Anfield demons, having historically struggled at that iconic stadium under Guardiola.

Haaland and Co. only managed a point at home to Liverpool earlier this season and while they thrashed the Reds 4-1 at the Etihad last campaign, Pep's side were beaten 1-0 in Merseyside courtesy of a beautiful Mohamed Salah goal.

To put this into perspective, City have won only once at Anfield under Guardiola, with that sole victory coming in the 2020-21 season. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that match was held behind closed doors, thus sparing the Cityzens from the daunting Anfield crowd.

Fortunately, Haaland and Co. are also in spectacular form, winning all but two of their last 20 matches — however, this is across all competition, unlike Liverpool. Manchester City's last Premier League defeat came away to Aston Villa in early December while their two slip-ups since then were home draws against Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Unlike Liverpool, Manchester City are not chasing the quadruple. However, the Abu Dhabi-owned side are in the hunt for another treble. Pep's men are in the FA Cup and are through to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, but the most important fixture is this trip to Anfield.

Furthermore, Guardiola's record against Klopp is also at stake. The Spaniard currently leads the head-to-head record but a win for Jurgen in his final season at Liverpool would ruin this for the former Barcelona tactician.

Team news

Liverpool: Things have picked up for the Reds in the injury department, with Dominik Szoboszlai and — more importantly — Mohamed Salah making their returns in the UEFA Europa League win over Sparta Praha. Ibrahima Konate was forced off the pitch with an issue in that game but Klopp later revealed that it was merely a precaution. Nonetheless, the Frenchman is a doubt while Klopp is confirmed to be without eight first-team players (Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Alisson Becker, Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch, and Ben Doak).

Man City: Matheus Nunes suffered a finger dislocation in the UEFA Champions League win over Copenhagen. Furthermore, Jeremy Doku is a doubt due to a muscular issue while Jack Grealish is sidelined. However, with Phil Foden, Kevin de Bruyne, and Erling Haaland back to their best, Pep should have more than enough at his disposal.

Key stats

  • Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have faced 15 times before in the Premier League, with the Spaniard boasting the slight edge — five wins to the German's four (six draws).

  • During this time, the Cityzens scored a whopping 30 goals against Liverpool while the Reds managed 19 against Manchester City.

  • Four out of seven of Man City's Anfield trips under Guardiola ended in defeats, with De Bruyne and Co. beating Liverpool on the road in the Premier League only once (D2).

  • Furthermore, the Merseyside giants have only lost twice in their last 20 Anfield encounters with Man City in the English top flight.

  • However, Klopp's men have only beaten Guardiola's side once in their last eight meetings (D4, L3).

  • In the last 30 Premier League showdowns between these two clubs, only twice has the away team won.
