Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, fresh off of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 wins against Serie A heavyweights, prepare to face off in a highly-anticipated Sunday showdown. This Metropolitano Stadium affair will give the hosts an opportunity for revenge but a victory over the Catalan powerhouse will be no easy feat.
Diego Simeone's men should confidently enter this tie following their midweek result in the UEFA Champions League. In a thrilling encounter with Inter Milan across both legs, Atletico Madrid overcame the runaway Serie A leaders to book their ticket to the quarterfinals, where they will face Dortmund.
Los Rojiblancos welcomed the Nerazzurri to the Spanish capital trailing 1-0 following a first-leg defeat. To make things worse, the deficit increased to two following Dimarco's goal in the 33rd minute. Fortunately, Antoine Griezmann pulled one back a few minutes later before Memphis Depay's 87th-minute goal took the tie to extra time.
Both teams had precious opportunities to win the game in normal time but the score line remained locked come the 120th minute, thus leading to penalties. The Spanish heavyweights triumphed, with Inter missing three penalties, sparking tears of joy from the beloved Diego Simeone. Things have been shaky for the 2020-21 La Liga winners recently, losing 2-0 to Cadiz in their most recent league outing while being thrashed 4-0 by Athletic Club across two legs in the Copa del Rey semifinals.
Griezmann and Co. now find themselves fifth in the table, a point behind Athletic Club, and at risk of missing out on automatic UEFA Champions League qualification. Simeone's men have played one less game than the aforementioned Basque outfit, which gives them a cushion, but failure to beat Barcelona on home soil must be avoided.
While Atletico fought tooth and nail with Inter in the round of 16, Barcelona saw off soon-to-be dethroned Serie A champions Napoli, with the Catalan giants beating the Scudetto holders in the home leg.
Xavi's men drew 1-1 in Naples, with both Robert Lewandowski and Victor Osimhen getting on the scoresheet. The Polish striker would go on to score again in the second leg but was joined on the scoresheet by Fermin Lopez and Joao Cancelo, beating the Italian outfit 3-1 (4-2 on aggregate).
Unfortunately, things will only get tougher for the Blaugrana as they drew PSG, led by former manager Luis Enrique, in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. Ironically, Barcelona could face Atletico Madrid in the semifinals if Xavi's men beat the Ligue 1 champions and their Spanish rivals overcome Dortmund.
Regardless, the focus is on Sunday's showdown. The visitors' form has not been perfect but they are unbeaten in their last seven games since losing 5-3 at home to Villarreal, a result which prompted Xavi to decide to step down at the end of the season.
Lewandowski and Co. have won all but two La Liga matches since, with those two slip-ups being draws against Granada and Athletic Club. Furthermore, with Catalan rivals Girona winning only two of their last seven fixtures, Xavi's men have moved within a point of La Liga's second-placed team.
Girona will be in action on Sunday as well, facing Real Betis, allowing the Blaugrana to move up in the table should Michel Sanchez's side drop points. The reigning Spanish champions will have to beat Atletico to achieve this but Xavi has already gotten the better of Simeone in the league earlier this season, overseeing a 1-0 victory over Atletico in December.

Atletico: Jose Gimenez, Mario Hermoso, and Thomas Lemar are all unavailable for the hosts. Additionally, while Antoine Griezmann recovered from an injury to play the Inter Milan game in its entirety, the Frenchman is now a doubt for this tie and will undergo a late test.
