Preview

Liverpool return to action in the Premier League this midweek, with the league favorites taking on relegation-battling Sheffield United on Thursday. These two sides are fighting for two opposite goals, with one eyeing the Premier League title while the other is fighting a losing battle to remain in the top flight.

While Jurgen Klopp's side will not be top of the table by the time kick-off arrives, the Reds enter this round as the number-one team in the league thanks to Sunday's results. This was due to Liverpool's win over Brighton over the weekend and the nil-nil draw between title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Merseyside giants had to pull off a comeback against the Seagulls after going a goal down after only two minutes thanks to a lovely Danny Welbeck goal. However, as has been the case all season, Klopp's relentless attack turned the tide, with Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah turning things around for a 2-1 win.

Arsenal's goalless draw at Manchester City a few hours later meant Salah and Co. leapfrogged the Gunners to take the top spot by two points. Guardiola's men, meanwhile, fell three behind, thus handing the Reds the advantage in this thrilling three-horse race.

However, with the Gunners and the Cityzens taking to the field a day earlier, beating Luton Town and Aston Villa respectively on Wednesday, Liverpool have dropped to second before they kicked a ball — City were unable to overtake them with a win due to the goal difference.

Fortunately, form favors the home side, having won all but two of their last 11 league fixtures, with those two slip-ups being the loss at Arsenal and the draw at home to Man City just before the recent international break.

Sheffield, as previously mentioned, are fighting a completely different battle, with the newly-promoted side doing their best to avoid dropping back down to the Championship immediately.

And to make matters worse, the Blades are fighting a losing battle. Not only are Chris Wilder's men bottom of the table with only 15 points from 29 matches, but the visitors are also a whopping 10 points behind the safety zone.

Nottingham Forest sit in 17th with 25 points, meaning Sheffield United appear destined to go down after only one season in the Premier League. Nonetheless, Oliver McBurnie and Co. will be keen to wrack up as many points between now and the season's end and influence the title race.

Unfortunately, the Blades' form makes for a gloomy reading, having won only once in their last 10 matches. Their most recent victory was a 3-1 triumph over Luton Town roughly a month ago and Sheffield's last win before that in the league came in early December against Brentford.

Liverpool are neither Luton Town nor Brentford, and with the game taking place at the iconic Anfield, Chris Wilder's men will have to produce an unforgettable performance to get the better of the Reds.

Team news

Liverpool: The hosts are still without Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, Joel Matip, Ben Doak, Thiago Alcantara, and Stefan Bajcetic all remain sidelined. Wataru Endo, meanwhile, is a doubt after picking up a knock but Andrew Robertson and Curtis Jones have both returned while Ibrahima Konate is also in contention for this fixture.

Sheffield United: Chris Basham, John Egan, Max Lowe, Rhys Norrington-Davies, Rhian Brewster, Tom Davies, George Baldock, and Daniel Jebbison are all sidelined for the visitors. Meanwhile, Vinicius Souza, Oliver Arblaster, and Cameron Archer are all doubts.
