Preview

England's most iconic derby returns for the second time in three weeks, with Liverpool and Manchester United, the nation's two most successful clubs, locking horns this Sunday at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Both sides are desperate for the win but for two different reasons, with the home side fighting an uphill battle to qualify for the UEFA Champions League while the Merseyside giants are locked in a heated three-horse title race.

Jurgen Klopp's men entered the weekend top of the league but just as was the case during the midweek fixtures, the Reds will have been leapfrogged by the time this game kicks off.

Thanks to Arsenal's win at Brighton, Salah and Co. have been relegated to the no.2 spot but are only a point behind the North London giants. However, with the Gunners boasting a superior goal difference, the Merseyside giants must win at Old Trafford to return to the summit.

Form favors the away side, having lost only once in their last 12 games, with that sole defeat coming in the FA Cup, not the Premier League. In the English top-flight, Klopp's men have won back-to-back matches since their 1-1 draw at home to Manchester City just before the international break, beating Brighton and Sheffield to continue where they left off.

The victory over Sheffield United was the more recent fixture, with Darwin Nunez, the in-form Alexis Mac Allister, and Cody Gakpo all getting on the scoresheet to ensure a 3-1 victory over the soon-to-be-relegated side.

However, that one and only defeat Liverpool suffered in their last 12 matches came against none other than Manchester United, with the Merseyside emerging on the losing end of a seven-goal FA Cup quarterfinal thriller.

Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah, and Harvey Elliott all got on the scoresheet but after squandering several opportunities to see off the game, the Reds were caught on the break in the final minute of extra time, with Amad Diallo shattering Liverpool's heart.

Manchester United should take confidence from their last encounter with Klopp's men as goals from Scott McTominay, Marcus Rashford, and Amad Diallo (2x) secured a dramatic win. However, that was only a glimmer of light in what has been a bleak season for the Red Devils.

Since eliminating the Merseyside giants, Ten Hag's men have failed to win a single game, drawing 1-1 away to Brentford in embarrassing fashion before suffering an even more humiliating 4-3 loss away to Chelsea.

On both occasions, Manchester United conceded in stoppage time. Bruno Fernandes and Co. were leading 3-2 at Stamford Bridge by 90+9 but two comical defensive blunders saw Cole Palmer score twice in less than two minutes to hand the English giants a defeat.

That result was also the latest blow to Manchester United's top-four hopes. Not only have they fallen 12 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa but David Moyes' West Ham have now moved level with Ten Hag's side on 48 points.

As a result, pressure continues to mount on the Dutch tactician, with several fans calling for his sacking. The 54-year-old will need to turn things around rapidly to save his future and a win over Liverpool could do just that. However, form does not favor the home side.

The Red Devils went on a lovely four-game winning streak in February but since then, Manchester United have won only one in four fixtures, with that sole victory coming at home to relegation-battling Everton.

Fortunately, Ten Hag boasts a brilliant record at Old Trafford against Klopp, winning both encounters with the German at the Theatre of Dreams. Does a third consecutive triumph await the Dutchman? Do not miss this showdown.

Team news

Manchester United: The Red Devils' injury crisis went from bad to worse in their recent outing, with Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans both suffering injuries — the latter was substituted for the Frenchman in the first half. As a result, Willy Kambwala looks likely to partner Harry Maguire as Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez are also sidelined. Question marks linger over Casemiro's fitness while Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martia, and Altay Bayindir are all unavailable.

Liverpool: Wataru Endo, who missed the win over Sheffield United, is expected to return for this tie. Unfortunately, Joel Matip, Ben Doak, Stefan Bajcetic, and Thiago Alcantara are all injured while Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Diogo Jota are expected to return to training soon, thus ruling them out for this tie.
